Cuba dissident's widow rejects official death account

The widow of Cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya has rejected a government report that blamed the car crash that killed her husband on the driver because she has been denied access to witnesses of his death.

Ofelia Acevedo criticized the government for not allowing her to talk to the two survivors of the crash, including the driver, who have been kept in custody since the July 22 incident in southeastern Cuba.

"I reject this report because it is the official report of the government of Cuba and because I have not had access to this information that they say they have," she told AFP. "I have no reason at all to believe this version of events."

The government insists Paya, 60, was killed when the rental vehicle in which he was riding went out of control and struck a tree.

In a lengthy report issued Friday, the Interior Ministry said the driver, Spanish political activist Angel Carromero, lost control of the vehicle when he abruptly hit the brakes on the slippery surface of an unpaved section of road while speeding.

Paya's family, however, has said it had information that the rental car was driven off the road by another vehicle.

Acevedo said she had not yet been able to talk to Carromero, 27, or the other survivor, Swedish political activist Jens Aron Modig, also 27.

"They were the last people who saw my husband alive and they have to know a lot more than I do so far," she said.

Authorities have kept the two witnesses in custody since they were discharged from hospital after being treated for injuries they suffered in the crash. Both men were in Cuba on tourist visas.

Acevedo said she did not believe the government's account of what Carromero said about the accident because "he has not had access to the communications media, outside the presence of state security, which has had him sequestered since he came out of the hospital."

Paya's widow said she had asked the ambassadors of Spain and Sweden to arrange for her to speak to Carromero and Modig but "not even they have been able to speak with them without the presence of state security."

Carromero, who is being held by police in a town close to where the crash occurred, faces charges of traffic violations resulting in death, which can carry up to 10 years in prison under Cuba's penal code.

In Madrid, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo confirmed Carromero was still being held in Cuba, and could possibly be charged on Monday or Tuesday once the investigation was over.

"If he were to be charged, we would like him to be staying in our embassy; in any case the most important thing is to bring home" Carromero, the Spanish minister said.

Also killed with Paya, winner of the European Parliament's Sakharov prize in 2002, was a fellow Cuban dissident, 31-year-old Harold Cepero Escalante.

Paya, a fervent Catholic, is best known for presenting the Cuban parliament in 2002 with a petition signed by 11,000 people demanding political change in Cuba.

Known as the "Varela Project," the initiative was instrumental in opening debate in Cuba on the direction of a communist regime dominated for more than half a century by Fidel Castro and his brother Raul.

Paya's death was keenly felt among Cuba's dissident community, and authorities have been quick to respond to any sign of protests.

About 50 people were arrested Tuesday after they emerged from Paya's funeral in Havana shouting anti-government slogans. Most were later released without charge, activists said.

Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesman Anders Jorle said there was no reason Modig, who is being held in an immigration detention center in Havana, should not be allowed to go home.

The Cuban Commission on Human Rights, officially outlawed but tolerated by the government, urged the regime to allow the two survivors to speak publicly about the accident.

"Now that the government has given the official version, we continue to insist that the absolute truth will be known when both survivors are able to make statements, without any kind of conditions," said the group's leader, Elizardo Sanchez.

Annual Multi Trip and Single Trip Travel Insurance - the Famous ...

cra9u4f0ma Posted by cra9u4f0ma on 5 hours ago

Such a tough issue has appeared in each traveller?s mind at least one time. So, prior to making selection you ought to each time know advantages and drawbacks of both annual multi trip and single trip cover.

What does keep money? Every person tries to save. We all are aware of that it is less expensive by the dozen. So, you must consider and plan in advance in order to save money. If you don?t travel much therefore you doubtless don?t need an annual multi-trip policy. On the other hand, if you are about to travel at least 3 times (e.g. small business visits, working as a volunteer, weekend holidays, collaborating in public and sport events abroad et cetera.) or you have relatives anywhere out of the motherland, whom you desire to go to see repeatedly, you must better think of an annual multi-trip travel insurance. It will definitely cut your costs twice.

What saves time? It is clear that it is quicker to purchase a multi-trip certificate just the once than to get it every single time you want it. It happens that individuals fail to remember the options they have chosen for their previous trip so that they start comparing the information again. Getting annual multi trip cover allows you look through your certificate any time you desire going on your e-mail. As a consequence, you purchase it just the once and stay relaxed the rest of the period.

What is better for different types of actions? It depends on you. It doesn?t matter which type of journey you select, anyway you may perhaps add additional coverage for dangerous activities, personal possessions and other choices. Both of these travel cover are all-round.

What is the difference in the coverage of insurance plans?

Most holiday insurance policies cover up worldwide visits. Still some travel insurance organizations offer nice deals. In particular, when arranging annual multi-trip insurance certificate for certain time you can get winter sports coverage totally free.

What is the age difference? At this time you must be well thought-out and precise. This thing varies depending on each single travel insurance company. On the other hand, single trip travel insurance policies more likely have larger age limit than annual multi-trip insurance policies. Yet there are insurance businesses that propose very good conditions for seniors.

What is vital concerning the travel insurance period?

When arranging any certificate, it is essential to select an immediate date. Otherwise, you won?t be insured for the abandonment of your future journeys. Majority doesn?t consider somewhat might affect their voyage. In spite of this, such cases as strikes may well be the reasons of the tour abandonment in the last days before a departure.

Accordingly, again, remember, planning is really vital. Understand that buying annual multi-trip travel insurance certificate more likely save your time, money and offer you some good deals. So, make an effort to be conscious to win, not to lose.

We recommend that you pick an immediate start date because this will ensure that you are insured for the cancellation of any pre-booked travel. Or else, if you select the departure date of your earliest travel and you ought to cancel prior to your departure, you will not be covered.

Top Ten Tips to Remember in Choosing the Right Pest Control ...

Are you having problems with ants, roaches, moths, ticks, termites, and fleas' infestation? The bigger issue when you have these pests at home is that they can bring harmful diseases to your family. If you are in Islington and are looking for professional help, here are some tips to consider in choosing the right pest control Islington company.

1.)Locate a licensed N1 pest control company. Make sure the firm you are dealing with has passed all necessary requirements to operate in this kind of business.

2.)You can find a contractor through print ads, referrals, and the Internet. The best way to find a contractor is by means of referral. At least through referral, you know someone who can attest the efficiency of the company. However, if you do not have referrals, you can always rely on good old print ads or the more high tech Internet to help you search.

3.)Once you have found contacts from the pest control Islington company, it is time to call their representative and ask for their licensing status and insurance. See to it that the company has coverage for operator errors such as damaging any property or staining your carpet.

4.)Once you have talked to the representative, it is time to verify their authenticity. Check with the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau to verify if the company is registered. At the same time, check if there were complaints filed against them in the past. 5.)Another way of making sure you are dealing with an efficient pest control contractor is to ask for referrals from the company. Those who are confident about their previous contracts will be proud to give you names and contact numbers from previous clients who agreed to do referrals in behalf of the company. Check with the referral if the contractor finished their job satisfactorily.

6.)Make sure you know about the coverage that the company is providing. This means you have to find out if they are handling year-round services or only service calls.

7.)Find out how much they charge for their services. Remember that each contractor has varied coverage for their services.

8.)Make a deal with the company and observe how they perform for the first couple of days.

9.)Notice how the agent handles business. Is the agent always on time? Is the agent dressed presentably during visits? Is the agent professional enough?

10.)Finally, take time in considering which N1 pest control company to deal with. Make sure you go through the contract thoroughly and that you agree on everything before you sign for it. Remember that the main priority is the safety of your family and the people living close to you.

Discovery of new white blood cell reveals target for better vaccine design

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers in Newcastle and Singapore have identified a new type of white blood cell which activates a killing immune response to an external source -- providing a new potential target for vaccines for conditions such as cancer or Hepatitis B.

Publishing in the journal Immunity, the team of researchers from Newcastle University in collaboration with A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) describe a new human tissue dendritic cell with cross-presenting function.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a type of white blood cell that orchestrate our body's immune responses to infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses, as well as cancer cells. They are also very important for eliciting the immune response generated by vaccines.

DCs kick start an immune response by presenting small fragments of molecules from micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses, or from vaccines or tumours, called antigens on their surface. This leads to activation of another white blood cell subset called T cells, which specialise in killing cells and are crucial for eliminating cancerous or infected cells. Most cells are only able to present antigens from within themselves, and so will only elicit an immune response if they are infected themselves. Only a specialised subset of DCs is able to generate a response to an external source of antigen, for example bacteria, vaccines and tumours.

The identity of human tissue DCs that are capable of presenting external antigen to activate the cell-killing response by T cells -- a process termed 'cross-presentation' -- has remained a mystery. Their discovery, as revealed by this research, will help scientists to design better targeted vaccine strategies to treat cancer and infections such as Hepatitis B.

"These are the cells we need to be targeting for anti-cancer vaccines," said Dr Muzlifah Haniffa, a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellow and Senior Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University. "Our discovery offers an accessible, easily targetable system which makes the most of the natural ability of the cell." The researchers also showed for the first time that dendritic cell subsets are conserved between species and have in effect created a map, facilitating the translation of mouse studies to the human immune system.

"The cross-species map is in effect a Rosetta stone that deciphers the language of mouse into human," explains Matthew Collin, Professor of Haematology from Newcastle University.

In the paper the researchers describe how the cross-presenting DCs were first isolated from surplus plastic surgery skin which was digested to melt the gelatinous collagen to isolate the cells. This research will have significant impact on the design of vaccines and other targeted immunotherapies.

The Rosetta Stone of our immune system: Mapping Human and Mouse dendritic cells

The Newcastle University team in collaboration with A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) have for the first time ever aligned the dendritic cell subsets between mouse and humans allowing the accurate translation of mouse studies into the human model for the first time.

The researchers isolated the dendritic cells from human blood and skin and those from mouse blood, lung and liver. Using gene expression analysis, they identified gene signatures for each human dendritic cell subset. Mouse orthologues of these genes were identified and a computational analysis was performed to match subsets across species.

This provides scientists for the first time with an accurate model to compare DCs between species. Professor Matthew Collin explains: "This is in effect a Rosetta stone that deciphers the language of mouse into human. It can put into context the findings from the extensive literature using mouse models to the human settings."

Dr. Haniffa added: "These gene signatures are available in a public repository accessible for all researchers to benefit from the data. It will allow detailed knowledge of individual human dendritic cell subsets to enable specific targeting of these cells for therapeutic strategy."

Stasis

I have this partially formed idea that I could use some help on. You see, I just finished watching the entire Fringe series (well until the end of the fourth season) and I had a burst of inspiration from S04E19; so, if you haven't seen it then I suggest you read no further if you don't like spoilers.

My inspiration stems mostly from the idea of Henrietta, and the Bishops. Of course the setting will be in a dystopian world in which the human race is kept under watch by another race (I haven't delved this far into the idea. I don't want them to be The Observers. I want this to be something as original as it can be). I want to have the story focus around a small group of resistors (of course they'll only be a small portion, but they will be very important) that may hold the key to their survival. The thing is, like the Bishops (and a form of Astrid possibly) they are from the not too distant past (from the present-future's perspective) who preserved themselves in hiding before they could be killed or worse. But then there is the "Henrietta" character that has been searching for them her whole life, because not only are they the key to winning a war that seemed to have been lost long ago, they are her family.

If you can understand that mess up there, then bless you; I know I'm not the best at explaining things. So I need a little help from anyone interested. Firstly, I need help setting this plot up. I think once I get going, I'll get on a roll and hopefully come up with something amazing, but you never know. So it would be nice if anyone interested could throw in their two cents. I do know, though, that I want the "Cryostasis" that preserves the main characters to be an important factor in all of this somehow.

Secondly, I need people interested to understand that the "Major Characters" will in a sense be "pre-made" Of course personalities; names; little details will essentially be up to the player's choice, but the history will already be defined. I am thinking of having a team of 6 major characters 4 from the "past" and 2 from the present-future. Then I will also allow other characters to be made. These may be "loyalists" or "resistors" maybe some of the "oppressors" (good or bad).

Thirdly, at the moment, I have not decided which character I will play. I have been playing the idea back and forth between the mother and daughter, but I have no concrete choices yet.

And lastly, I am not new to RPing, but I am very new to RPG. I am still getting used to how things are set up and done around here. Putting that with the fact that I've never been much of a good "GM", makes it a little hard for me to get the ball rolling. I'm not saying it can't be done; I wouldn't be posting this if I thought that. It's just that I will need a little patience with how I run it. I'm sure once we get into the RP and the plot is flowing, things will sail smoothly (hopefully), but I just need a little time to adjust and understand how to do this right.

I thank you for taking your time to read through my post.

Worldwide market share for smartphones

IDC reported Friday that Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphone sales, in part because its new Galaxy phones came out before Apple updated its iPhone.

Samsung's Galaxy S3 phones got good reviews when it came out late in the second quarter. Apple's iPhone 4S came out in October, and a new one isn't due until this fall. A drop in market share for Apple is typical several months after the release of an iPhone model.

Samsung and Apple dominate with nearly half of the worldwide market for smartphones.

Here are IDC's figures for worldwide smartphone unit sales and market share in the second quarter of 2012:

? Samsung Electronics Co., 50.2 million units, 32.6 percent share (17 percent a year earlier)

? Apple Inc., 26 million units, 16.9 percent share (18.8 percent a year earlier)

? Nokia Corp., 10.2 million units, 6.6 percent share (15.4 percent a year earlier)

? HTC Corp., 8.8 million units, 5.7 percent share (10.7 percent a year earlier)

? ZTE Corp., 8 million units, 5.2 percent share (1.8 percent a year earlier)

? Other, 50.7 million units, 32.9 percent share (36.2 percent a year earlier)

Life Is But A Dream by Katie m. Berggren
Life Is But A Dream by Katie m. Berggren ~ snag a print here

While lying next to my son who is quickly drifting off to sleep, I?m going over a thought my friend Liz shared this afternoon while we visited: Why is it that, in a home, the two people who are the oldest and most capable of understanding and being alone and sleeping alone, sleep together; and the smallest person, the one who is still learning and trying to understand, sleeps alone?

?

I roll this around in my hazy, sleepy mind ~ not looking at it too closely, not wanting to concentrate directly on it, just wanting to move it around and get its essence, get the general feeling of it. As one would roll a butterscotch candy around the mouth, keeping it moving with the tongue but never sucking too hard, or actually biting. Just wanting to enjoy the flavor and gather the essence.

?

This thought, though, of the smallest one, the one most likely to feel fear, loneliness, uncertainty ~ as the one who is alone through the night? Close, yet alone. It is an interesting thought.

?

As I try to pull a general feeling from this, I find I?m also very open to pulling an image.. What sort of a painting could this contemplation inspire?

?

And in regard to a finished painting stemming from this inspiration: what could it share and what could it teach?

Some rue neglect at S. Korea's 'enemy cemetery'

PAJU, South Korea (AP) ? Just south of the Demilitarized Zone, hundreds of identical wooden graves poke from a grassy hill surrounded by rice paddies and trees. Some markers are rotting; others have been knocked to the dirt; most have no names.

Here, within sight of the North's dark mountains, is South Korea's badly neglected "enemy cemetery," final resting place for Chinese and North Koreans, most of them killed in the Korean War that ended with an armistice agreement 59 years ago Friday.

The two Koreas remain bitter enemies. China, however, has become one of Seoul's most important economic partners and a significant source of tourists. But those interested in visiting the graves of their countrymen who fought in the 1950-53 conflict may have a hard time even finding it. There is no parking lot, no signs on the main road; those who do make it are often saddened by what they see.

"My fellow countrymen were left in the wild by themselves. So lonely," said Huang Zhun, son of a Korean War veteran who survived. Huang, a businessman in east China's Hangzhou city, visited the cemetery last year to honor the dead.

Last year, more than 2 million tourists visited South Korea from China, which established diplomatic ties with Seoul in 1992 and has been its biggest trading partner since 2004. South Korean records estimate nearly 150,000 Chinese troops died in the Korean War, while China says 116,000.

Inspired by visiting Chinese, local officials have proposed renovating the cemetery. But the bitter feelings most South Koreans have toward their northern neighbors remains a seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

"How can we sympathize with people who aimed their guns at us?" said Won Bok-gi, an 82-year-old Korean War veteran. "I absolutely oppose such a move. ... We should destroy such a place."

The South Korean government has collected the scattered remains of about 770 North Koreans and 270 Chinese and buried them here since 1996, calling it a humanitarian measure. Most of the dead are unidentified.

Qin Furong, a 63-year-old bank employee from Jinan, in eastern China, had long dreamed of finding the remains of her father, who was killed in the war when she was 2. She visited the enemy cemetery after learning about it 2010, but found most of the graves marked only by wooden signs that read "anonymous."

"No names," she said in a phone interview with The Associated Press in China. So she burned paper "spirit money," bowed before a mass grave and made offerings of fruit and alcohol.

"Let it be for all the Chinese soldiers who are buried there," said Qin, who later asked a friend to bring her soil from the cemetery, which she plans to take to her father's hometown as a memorial to him. She's grateful South Korea has a place for its former enemies, but she's disappointed there's no way to know if her father is among them.

Only a few people visit the cemetery each day. During a recent visit by Associated Press journalists, the burial mounds were littered with cigarette butts, possibly used in lieu of incense offerings by Chinese visitors.

Some South Koreans want to do more. Local resident Kim Dong-hun is pushing for private development of the cemetery, hoping it could increase tourism and also be a site of pilgrimage for the Chinese.

Mukgai, a South Korean who goes by his Buddhist name and plans to soon become a monk, conducted a 108-day prayer session at the cemetery this year, and plans to build a small temple there and hold a concert.

"Offering the highest-level respect to the dead is a heroic act," he said.

Gyeonggi province, which has jurisdiction over the cemetery, discussed a renovation plan with Defense Ministry officials earlier this year, but provincial officials later shelved the idea because of worries over a possible conservative backlash ahead of December's presidential election. Provincial officials who attended the meeting spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss it with the media.

The Defense Ministry declined to comment.

Tensions between the Koreas remain high since the sinking of a South Korean warship and a North Korean artillery strike on a border island in 2010. Pyongyang has threatened several times in recent months to attack Seoul, and its April rocket launch, said by North Korea to be a peaceful attempt to send a satellite into space, was widely seen as a test of its long-range missile capabilities.

Further complicating the cemetery's fate is that not all who are buried here died in the Korean War. Also among the forlorn graves are the bodies of nearly 30 North Korean commandos who unsuccessfully stormed South Korea's presidential palace in 1968, as well as a North Korean agent who killed himself after planting a bomb that killed 115 people aboard a South Korean jetliner in 1987.

Neither Pyongyang nor Beijing has shown interest in taking back the remains of their nationals or trying to identify them.

In a written response Thursday to an AP request for comment, the Chinese Civil Affairs ministry said it "will closely monitor the conditions of overseas facilities for Chinese martyrs and will collaborate with related departments on relevant efforts." It made no direct reference to the South Korean cemetery.

Pyongyang hasn't commented on the cemetery, and when Seoul asked it to retrieve its troops' remains in the 1980s, North Korea accepted only the ashes of dozens of Chinese soldiers.

Lee Chang-hyung, an analyst at Seoul's government-affiliated Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, said the South should fix up the Chinese graves and leave the North Korean ones to decay.

"We need to make a good use of the cemetery," he said, "for the development of our military and diplomatic relations with China."

GELDOF'S GRUMBLINGS

Not everyone in London is looking forward to the Olympics.

Bob Geldof, the former Boomtown Rats frontman and "Live Aid" charity fund-raiser, confirmed his contrarian reputation when asked at a reception for boxing legend Muhammad Ali if he was excited about the games.

"Nope."

No sport he was excited about?

"The egg and spoon race."

But, Geldof conceded, the games have at least brought much-needed regeneration to a post-industrial swath of east London ? transformed from gritty to green by the 500-acre (200-hectare) Olympic Park.

"That was a pretty crap part of town, no matter what anyone says," Geldof said. "Now it's nice."

A SPANISH OLYMPICS?

As the debt-ridden Spanish government hovers on the brink of needing a sovereign bailout, the country is continuing to pursue a bid for the 2020 Olympics. Spanish sports secretary Miguel Cardenal maintains that Madrid winning the Olympics after two failed bids would help the country's economic recovery.

"The Spanish state is calling for its citizens to tighten its belts to accept the need for a degree of sacrifice and the measures are certainly painful," Cardenal said in London. "But we would nevertheless pursue this project," he said, saying that "this is something that will boost our aspirations to have a sustainable economy."

Bidding again, Cardenal insists Madrid will only spend where "absolutely necessary," but pointed out that much of the infrastructure is already in place.

"All of us will have to be very careful indeed in the way we use public funds," Madrid mayor Ana Botella added.

Missing out on the London Games, which start on Friday, appears to have been good fortune for a Spanish government struggling to keep a handle on its debts. Now there's time for a recovery in the Spanish economy long before 2020.

Madrid is competing against Istanbul and Tokyo. The host of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games will be announced on Sept. 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

TUBE TRAVEL

British Olympic Association chairman Colin Moynihan is avoiding official cars at the London Olympics and taking the "Tube" from his hotel in the central part of the city to the Olympic site at Stratford.

Moynihan said he made it along the Jubilee subway line to Stratford in 45 minutes Thursday. He also gets a chance to meet and greet fellow travelers and even took the opportunity to ask a journalist traveling near him some questions about how things were going at the main games site.

"I think others who are staying at official hotels in the city would do well to consider public transport," Moynihan says. "It's clearly the best way to go."

WHAT RHYMES WITH 'LONDON'?

Want nothing more than one smooth ride

And not deal with a Tube that's tied.

THE TORCH APPROACHES ...

Preparations are still under way all around Buckingham Palace for Thursday evening's arrival of the Olympic torch.

Barricades surround the palace and outline the route the torch will travel. The plan is for the runner to enter the gates and hand off to another runner, who will head to Hyde Park.

Guards from the contracted Security Response firm say they've been in place since 1 a.m. and will direct pedestrians until 10 p.m. The streets will be closed at 5 pm in anticipation of the arrival.

There was rehearsal on The Mall, where the theme from "Chariots of Fire" was pumping out of speakers and an announcer was practicing his introduction of Thursday night's runner.

There's still a lot of work to be done, though; most of the flag posts closest to the palace do not yet have their flags.

ARRIVAL OBSERVATIONS

AP Dublin's Shawn Pogatchnik reports in on his trip to an increasingly crowded London:

Traveling into London from Dublin, 400 miles (600 kilometers) or so across the Irish Sea, I can't tell if my travel glass is half full or half empty.

Yes, I've been subject to myriad delays. But I've experienced unexpected and impressive efficiency, too, from the extra staff at every link in the chain.

I've flown Dublin-London routes for 25 years. I've just experienced these firsts:

?The first-ever announcement on a British train that didn't sound like it was being piped in live from Atlantis. Clear, crisp, friendly voice. A bizarre moment.

?An unprecedented display of signs at airport and train stations, all in that London Olympic hot pink. It's going be impossible to get lost in central London.

?My first clean London escalator. They usually look and sound like they haven't been cleaned or oiled since the Blitz. But coming up to the surface at Victoria, I'm dazzled by the gleaming, obviously scoured stainless steel on the steps and walls. Not a blemish of gum or graffiti in sight.

London is looking cleaner and better than ever, dating to my first time living here in 1988.

WRONG FLAG

It didn't seem to get in the way of the soccer ? for the North Koreans, at least.

North Korea's women's soccer team defeated Colombia 2-0 after the match was delayed for more than an hour over the diciest of diplomatic miscues: the mistaken display, by London Olympic organizers, of the South Korean flag instead of the North Korean one on a jumbo screen overlooking the field.

"If this matter couldn't have been resolved, then I thought going on is nonsense," coach Sin Ui Gun said through an interpreter after the game is Glasgow, Scotland. "We were angry because our players were introduced as if they were from South Korea, which may affect us very greatly as you might know."

Mea culpa, said the London Olympic operation, saying "steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."

LATE-NIGHT FIREWORKS

It was a midnight Olympic light show ? unexpected and free ? for residents of London's Stratford section.

A technical rehearsal for the opening ceremony wrapped up past midnight with two full minutes of fireworks early Thursday over Olympic Stadium, a spectacular (if loud) treat for the neighborhood that adjoins Olympic Park. On Stratford's High Street, people making their way home stopped, looked up and oohed and ahhed.

Will it offset the expected gridlock they're girding for in their community? Maybe not. But it was a nice late-night gift for those out and about at the late hour.

FIRE AND EMOTION

The most striking thing about the Olympic torch relay is just how touching it is.

Hundreds of people, many families with young children, got up early Thursday to see the torch as it left the north London district of Camden at 6:50 a.m. The good-natured crowd defied security guards' efforts to corral them behind barriers, mobbing the former English rugby star who was the first torchbearer of the day.

Forget the celebrities and the sports stars and the local heroes carrying the torch. The crowd itself was the star.

It was Day 69 of a 70-day journey across the country that culminates in Friday's opening ceremony. It made me wish I still had a 4-year-old I could pop on my shoulders and say, "Look, Kelly ? there's the torch!" Hundreds of family memories were made today.

RISE, SHINE

Up and at it early, and it's easy for an American to be fresh at this hour. Why? Because most pubs in London close between 11 p.m. and midnight ? far earlier than we're used to back in the U.S.

That's old news to the locals, but a bit of a bummer to visitors who are just getting warmed up at that hour.

But maybe it's a blessing. With the Olympic torch hitting central London on Thursday and due to pass many landmarks, navigating is going to be tricky and probably best done without a pounding headache.

How our brains see men as people and women as body parts: Both genders process images of men, women differently

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? When casting our eyes upon an object, our brains either perceive it in its entirety or as a collection of its parts. Consider, for instance, photo mosaics consisting of hundreds of tiny pictures that when arranged a certain way form a larger overall image: In fact, it takes two separate mental functions to see the mosaic from both perspectives.

A new study suggests that these two distinct cognitive processes also are in play with our basic physical perceptions of men and women -- and, importantly, provides clues as to why women are often the targets of sexual objectification.

The research, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, found in a series of experiments that participants processed images of men and women in very different ways. When presented with images of men, perceivers tended to rely more on "global" cognitive processing, the mental method in which a person is perceived as a whole. Meanwhile, images of women were more often the subject of "local" cognitive processing, or the objectifying perception of something as an assemblage of its various parts.

The study is the first to link such cognitive processes to objectification theory, said Sarah Gervais, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the study's lead author.

"Local processing underlies the way we think about objects: houses, cars and so on. But global processing should prevent us from that when it comes to people," Gervais said. "We don't break people down to their parts -- except when it comes to women, which is really striking. Women were perceived in the same ways that objects are viewed."

In the study, participants were randomly presented with dozens of images of fully clothed, average-looking men and women. Each person was shown from head to knee, standing, with eyes focused on the camera.

After a brief pause, participants then saw two new images on their screen: One was unmodified and contained the original image, while the other was a slightly modified version of the original image that comprised a sexual body part. Participants then quickly indicated which of the two images they had previously seen.

The results were consistent: Women's sexual body parts were more easily recognized when presented in isolation than when they were presented in the context of their entire bodies. But men's sexual body parts were recognized better when presented in the context of their entire bodies than they were in isolation.

"We always hear that women are reduced to their sexual body parts; you hear about examples in the media all the time. This research takes it a step further and finds that this perception spills over to everyday women, too," Gervais said. "The subjects in the study's images were everyday, ordinary men and women ? the fact that people are looking at ordinary men and women and remembering women's body parts better than their entire bodies was very interesting."

Also notable is that the gender of participants doing the observing had no effect on the outcome. The participant pool was evenly divided between men and women, who processed each gender's bodies similarly: Regardless of their gender, perceivers saw men more "globally" and women more "locally."

"We can't just pin this on the men. Women are perceiving women this way, too," Gervais said. "It could be related to different motives. Men might be doing it because they're interested in potential mates, while women may do it as more of a comparison with themselves. But what we do know is that they're both doing it."

Would there be an antidote to a perceiver's basic cognitive processes that lead women to be reduced and objectified? Researchers said some of the study's results suggested so. When the experiment was adjusted to create a condition where it was easier for participants to employ "global" processing, the sexual body part recognition bias appeared to be alleviated. Women were more easily recognizable in the context of their whole bodies instead of their various sexual body parts.

Because the research presents the first direct evidence of the basic "global" vs. "local" framework, the authors said it could provide a theoretical path forward for more specific objectification work.

"Our findings suggest people fundamentally process women and men differently, but we are also showing that a very simple manipulation counteracts this effect, and perceivers can be prompted to see women globally, just as they do men," Gervais said. "Based on these findings, there are several new avenues to explore."

Even though it seems they are unlikely to drag anyone before the Patents Court because it would cost too much, the letter the 9000 O2 customers will receive - PDF link - does not seem to be nearly so candid.

So I had a look at them - http://goldeneyeint.com/index.jsp

I entered their postcode into the Data Protection Register search page and, although there were three companies listed with their address, none was Goldeneye (International) Limited. Nor did any company listed use Goldeneye as a trading name or style.

So I reported them. Call me old fashioned if you must, but wouldn't it be nice if those alleging misdeeds by others could take the trouble to comply with the law?

I checked whence Goldeneye (International) Limited had obtained its data and found that they used the same source - Clem Volger - who was involved in previous cases. See http://goldeneyeint.com/IP_tracking.jsp and http://adlitem.co.uk/index3.asp - yes, he seems proud to have worked for Davenport Lyons and ACS Law.

But what's this at the foot of the page?

Adlitem Ltd Old Hall, Reepham Road Foulsham Norfolk NR20 5SL
Copyright ? Adlitem Ltd 2012

That does look a bit naughty, when one considers Adlitem Limited was dissolved on 13 September 2011.

So that got reported, too.
