MIAMI?? A Miami police officer is accused of driving 120 mph on a turnpike because he was late for his off-duty job working security at a school.

The Florida Highway Patrol says officer Fausto Lopez was arrested at gunpoint after leading police on a brief high-speed chase.

According to a police report, a trooper spotted a patrol car changing lanes in a dangerous manner earlier this month. The report says the patrol car ignored warnings to pull over and led a brief high-speed chase before stopping near Hollywood.

Miami police spokesman Delrish Moss told The Associated Press on Saturday that administrative action against Lopez depends on the outcome of the case.

Univision first reported the arrest.

Peter Jackson trying to aid ex-US death row inmate (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? Director Peter Jackson said Friday that he was working with a high-profile former American death row inmate in hopes of getting the man a complete pardon.

Jackson, best known for his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, said he received an exemption to New Zealand law to allow Damien Echols to visit him. Echols was part of a group known as the West Memphis Three who were convicted of killing three boys in the U.S. state of Arkansas in 1993. He and the other two men were released in August after pleading guilty to lesser charges and insist they are innocent.

At a news conference Friday in which Jackson stood alongside New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at the North Island set where Jackson is filming a two-part version of "The Hobbit," the director said he'd gone through the same process open to everyone in applying for an exemption to immigration laws.

"There are all sorts of emotive headlines about Damien Echols, killer, coming to New Zealand, but the reality is that Damien Echols is an innocent man who has spent 18 years incarcerated in a tiny cell," Jackson said.

The director told reporters that he and partner Fran Walsh had worked for seven or eight years to try and help free Echols.

"He's come here to work with us on a couple of things," Jackson said. "We're doing investigative work, we're doing forensic work ... with the purpose of getting a complete pardon."

Jackson clarified that Echols was not taking part in work on "The Hobbit."

Echols is one of the highest-profile death row inmates to be released in the U.S. Three HBO documentaries about his case brought national attention and sparked the involvement of several celebrities, including Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder.

Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley ? who were teenagers at the time ? were convicted of killing three 8-year-old boys who were found naked and tied in a drainage ditch in the Arkansas town of West Memphis. The case hinged on the testimony of witnesses who said they'd heard the teens talk about the killings.

Echols was the only one sentenced to death.

In 2007, lawyers representing Echols claimed that new DNA tests taken from the crime scene didn't match any of the men. In August, the men agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges and were released immediately for time served ? all the while publicly maintaining their innocence.

Familiar position

Lovie Smith told everyone to calm down after the team?s loss to the Lions on Monday Night Football in Week 5. ?He pointed out that if the team could beat the Vikings and Bucs, they would be 4-3 just like last year at the bye.

Give Smith credit: That?s exactly what happened. ?After a?tumultuous?training camp and start to the season, the Bears are in decent enough shape.

The Bears season has a different feel to it after two strong efforts. They completely destroyed Minnesota, and controlled the action against the Bucs in London.

The Bears have proven capable of beating mediocre competition. They can?t beat the best NFC teams: The Packers, Saints, and Lions all have wins over Chicago.

Forte leads the way

Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL. ?Matt Forte may be the most important to his team. ?Forte leads all players by a wide margin in yards from scrimmage with 1,091. ?He is just off Chris Johnson?s all time yards from scrimmage record pace.

It?s hard to overstate how good Forte is as a receiver. He has a shot to be the first running back since Marshall Faulk to put up over 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. It?s no coincidence Mike Martz was involved in both seasons.

Improving passing game

Jay Cutler may have enjoyed the best two game stretch of his Bears career in the loss to the Lions and the win over the Vikings. He is looking more comfortable. His pass protection has improved from absymal to simply lame.

The offense still has to be more consistent after some early ugly outings, but it?s headed in the right direction. It?s 12th in scoring despite the 21 sacks Cutler has taken. The team has a +4 turover margin.

Safety dance

Chris Harris started the season at strong safety; he was released Thursday. Brandon Meriweather was signed for $3.25 million and now sits on the bench. The team is going young with Major Wright and Chris Conte at the position. ?This is a shaky secondary overall.

Average defense

Lovie Smith teams are supposed to be built on defense. At this stage, the Bears have been ordinary stopping opponents. Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher are still playing at a high level, but they don?t get a lot of help. The defensive line has been decent. Julius Peppers has played at less than 100%.

Chicago?s only chance to make a postseason push is for the defense to improve dramatically.

Angling for a wild card

The Bears are three games back in the NFC North, so their only hope for a playoff spot is a wild card. They are in decent shape with wins over NFC contenders like Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

The next two weeks after the bye are huge. ?The Bears travel to Philadelphia before hosting Detroit. Sweeping those two games would put Chicago in terrific position before an oddly timed four-game tour through the AFC West.

After seven weeks, the Bears are in the mix. Their recent play indicates we?ll probably be talking about Bears tiebreakers come late December.

Obama to observe Hindu holiday (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama will meet with senior advisers at the White House on Friday morning.

In the afternoon, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will join the president in the Oval Office.

In the evening, Obama attends a reception celebrating the Hindu holiday of Diwali at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated this week by Hindus all over the world. It's also important to some Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains. Diwali draws on the legends of each religion.

Last year, the president and first lady were in Mumbai, India, during the festival.

'Grand Theft Auto V' is coming ... to Los Angeles?

"Grand Theft Auto V" is in the works. But where will gamers get to live out their crime-filled fantasies this time?

Good news virtual gangsters: Rockstar Games has officially revealed via its website that the next installment in its famed "Grand Theft Auto" franchise is underway.

Rockstar has yet to unveil any information about "Grand Theft Auto V"?? only that it will be releasing a trailer for the game on Nov. 2. However, game site Kotaku?reports that?"a source familiar with the game" told them it will take place in some version of Los Angeles.

Kotaku also reports that multiple sources have told them "GTA V" will feature more than just one playable character. (And for the record, Kotaku is often right when it comes to the rumor/anonymous source department.)

It's been three years since we've had an all-new console/PC installment in the controversial and ground-breaking "Grand Theft Auto" franchise, renowned for its gritty, crime-filled stories and epic, open-world gameplay. The superb "GTA IV" launched in 2008 and its two downloadable episodes?? "The Lost and the Damned" and "The Ballad of Gay Tony"?? arrived in 2009. 2009 also gave us "GTA: Chinatown Wars" for the handheld game machines.

Rockstar Games

Gamers visited Los Santos - a virtual version of Los Angeles - back in 2004's "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." Will we be making a return trip for "GTA V"?

For months now, rumors have been circulating that Rockstar was hard at work on an all-new game. Of course, the question is: When will we actually get to play it?

In June, GameSpot reported that anonymous sources had told them "GTA V" would likely launch sometime in 2012. But many game reviewers and pundits are now wondering if we might not see "GTA V" launch later than that?? perhaps not until there are new Xbox and PlayStation machines to power it.

Looks like on Nov. 2, we'll find out if the City of Angels goes to the devil again.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Market turmoil during the summer helped push online investment broker TD Ameritrade Holding Corp's fiscal fourth-quarter profit up 44 percent.

The Omaha, Neb.-based company said Tuesday that it earned $163.7 million, or 29 cents per share, in the three months ended Sept. 30. That compares with $114 million, or 20 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

There were 2 percent fewer shares outstanding in the most recent quarter, the result of company buybacks.

Revenue rose 16 percent to $703.5 million, from $608.8 million last year.

The results fell short of Wall Street projections. Analysts, on average, had forecast profit of 31 cents per share, on revenue of $713.6 million, according to data provided by FactSet.

The July-to-September quarter, the worst in the markets since the 2008 economic crisis, saw average client trades per day of 415,739, up 31 percent from 317,684 per day last year.

Total trades reached 26.6 million for the period, up from 20.3 million. The average commissions and fees per trade slid 4 percent to $11.85.

TD Ameritrade said it saw 150,000 new accounts opened during the quarter, for a total of 5.6 million funded accounts. The company ended its fiscal year with a net gain of 162,000 accounts from the same period a year ago.

New client assets reached $12.4 billion during the period, which the company says translates to an annualized growth rate of 12 percent.

For the full fiscal year, TD Ameritrade earned $637.8 million, or $1.11 per share, up 8 percent from $592.2 million, or $1 per share, for fiscal 2010.

The company says it expects to earn between $1 and $1.35 per share for its next fiscal year. That range encompasses the $1.20 per share annual profit forecast by analysts.
