"Midnight" actor: Woody wouldn't tell us what it was about (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Arriving on the Parisian set of Woody Allen's 44th film, "Midnight in Paris," in the summer of 2010, veteran TV actor Corey Stoll milled around with such well-established big-screen actors as Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard and Rachel McAdams, "not really knowing what we were doing."

In fact, at that point, "Only Owen had even read the entire script," Stoll, who played Ernest Hemingway in the Allen hit, told a Q&A following a showing of the film at the Landmark Theater Thursday night, part of TheWrap's Awards Screening Series.

Signs that the septuagenarian Allen had begun to lose it?

Hardly. It was merely well-established method for a legendary comic filmmaker about to direct his biggest box office success.

Interviewed alongside Allen's younger sister and longtime producing partner, Letty Aronson, by TheWrap founder and CEO Sharon Waxman, Stoll said Allen works to "imbue a sort of theatrical energy" among his actors.

"He moves way too fast for you to try to perfect your performance," said Stoll, who played Det. Tomas "T.J." Jaruszalski on NBC's "Law & Order: Los Angeles." "But Woody doesn't want you to be perfect," he added. "He wants this rough, spontaneous human reaction."

Receiving his role, Stoll said he was summoned to Allen's New York headquarters and given a two-page scene -- one in which Wilson's time-traveling American tourist is riding in a car with Stoll's Hemingway, on a short drive to visit Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates).

"Owen had the real script, but the rest of us had only our scenes," Stoll said. "We didn't know what the movie was about."

Aronson chimed in: "Woody feels it's more spontaneous if the actors don't know the entire story -- it's a way of getting a more spontaneous reaction from them."

Stoll, however, said that during his initial casting meeting with Allen, he was given some guidance: the filmmaker wanted him to play almost a caricature of the legendarily macho Hemingway, as opposed to a more realistic approach to what he might really have been like.

"I had a few months of free time, and I just read and read and read," Stoll explained. "I got addicted to the muscularity of Hemingway's prose. I just sort of brewed in that manly stew for a few months."

While Stoll discussed actor's method issues, Aronson gave details about the film's financing: the $18 million project was funded as part of a three-picture deal with Spain's Mediapro. (The next film under the deal is the Jesse Eisenberg-led "Nero Fiddled," which just wrapped filming in Rome and is in the editing bay.)

Allen had wanted to make "Midnight in Paris" earlier, but shooting the project on location in Paris was cost-prohibitive until France enacted tax rebates that discounted the budget of the film by about 15 percent.

Aronson -- a former school teacher who got her first showbiz break as a researcher for "Saturday Night Live's" "Weekend Update" segment -- was also pried about growing up with Allen in Brooklyn.

What was he like?

"Interesting and funny," she said, getting a bit laconic at that point. "Confident but quiet."

Pressed further by an obviously curious audience, she opened up a little more.

"Very early on, he did write jokes that appeared in local newspapers under celebrity's names. He was only 16 when he did that. ... And he was very interested in magic -- he always was doing magic shows. He was always interested in entertainment. He went to all the movies."

Also addressed by Aronson: The tendency by the audience to believe that Allen's leading men, including Owen Wilson, are playing younger versions of the filmmaker.

"They're not always him," she explained. "When he writes, he writes the way he speaks so everyone just thinks it's him."

(AP) ? Market pressure on Italy eased somewhat Thursday after the president vowed to accelerate reforms to make way for Premier Silvio Berlusconi's resignation as early as this weekend and a bond sale went better than expected.

President Giorgio Napolitano assured skittish investors that Berlusconi will step down after reforms are passed ? likely by Saturday ? and he named respected economist Mario Monti senator for life in a move that puts him in line to run the next government.

Italy is under intense pressure to prove it has the political strength to enact measures to increase confidence in its ability to repay its debts, which stand at a huge 120 percent of economic output. But economic growth is weak and the government has been incapable of pushing through reforms to revive it over the past decade.

Italy's leading business newspaper summed up the growing sentiment with an enormous bold-faced headline: "Hurry Up."

Investors are worried that if Italy's borrowing rates remain too high for too long, it will be blocked out of financial markets and need rescue loans to repay its bondholders. That would be devastating for both the euro and the global economy.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year bonds dropped below 7 percent on Thursday after a bond sale went better than expected. The yield had spiked to almost 7.5 percent on Wednesday, topping the threshold that eventually forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailouts. By midday Thursday it had eased back down to 6.94 percent.

Italy easily sold ?5 billion ($6.8 billion) in 12-month bonds at borrowing rates which were not as bad as expected. Investors asked for an interest rate of 6.087 percent to lend Italy the 12-month money. That's up sharply from 3.57 percent in the last such auction last month, but well below analyst expectations of 7 percent. Demand for the bonds was also strong, almost twice the amount on sale.

Indications that Monti, a leading economist who heads Milan's Bocconi University, would head a new government brought some relief, but many details still need to be worked out.

The elegant, gray-haired Monti, 68, made his reputation as a strong-willed economist when as EU competition commissioner he blocked General Electric's takeover of Honeywell.

Berlusconi's designated successor Angelino Alfano indicated on Italian TV that the premier would step down between Saturday and Monday, and that he would accept Monti. But the allied Northern League, a key element of Berlusconi's government, is staunchly opposed to a government of technocrats.

The main opposition parties appear to be in line to accept Monti as the head of a broad-based government of technocrats, however some more hard-line elements of the left, including unions, remain opposed.

Antonio Di Pietro, a former prosecutor who heads a small left-wing party, said his party would not support Monti.

Financial chaos reverberated around the world, and investors pulled money out of Europe and stock markets fell.

Investors fear Italy might follow Greece, Ireland and Portugal into begging for a bailout from its partners in the euro. But Italy's ?1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion) debt is far too great for Europe to cover.

Berlusconi announced Tuesday he would step down after Parliament passes a series of economic reforms to stave off financial ruin in Italy. But markets worried the tenacious premier will try to stay in power.

Parliamentary whips feverishly worked out a timetable to ensure that the Italian Senate would give final approval Friday to the package of measures, aimed at stimulating growth and reining in debt, according to state TV. It said the lower house would do the same on Saturday, meaning Berlusconi could be out before the weekend is over.

Removing sugar-sweetened beverages from schools associated with reduced access to, but not consumption of these beverages among adolescents

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2011) ? State policies banning all sugar-sweetened beverages in schools are associated with reduced in-school access and purchase of these beverages, however these policies are not associated with a reduction in overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

"In the past 25 years, sources of energy intake among youth have shifted toward greater consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda, sports drinks, and high-calorie fruit drinks," the authors write as background information in the study. "The Institute of Medicine recommended that all sugar-sweetened beverages be banned in schools, but many state competitive food policies have focused primarily on soda while allowing sports drinks, fruit drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages."

Daniel R. Taber, Ph.D., M.P.H., and colleagues from the University of Illinois at Chicago, examined state policies that banned all sugar-sweetened beverages in schools compared with states that banned only soda or had no beverage policy for in-school purchases to determine whether these policies were associated with reduced in-school access and purchase of sugar-sweetened beverages. The authors also sought to determine if these polices were associated with reduced overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages among adolescents.

The analysis included 6,900 students from public schools in 40 states, who were sampled during their fifth and eighth grade years (Spring 2004 and 2007, respectively) and had completed questionnaires about their in-school access to and purchase of sugar-sweetened beverages, as well as their overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. The authors found that the proportion of students who reported in-school sugar-sweetened beverage access and purchasing were similar in states that banned only soda (66.6 percent and 28.9 percent) compared with states with no beverage policy (66.6 percent and 26 percent, respectively).

Overall, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was not associated with state policy as the authors found that in each policy category, approximately 85 percent of students reported consuming sugar-sweetened beverages at least once in the past seven days, and 26 percent to 33 percent of students reported daily consumption. Additional analysis indicated that overall consumption had only a modest association with in-school sugar-sweetened beverage access.

"To summarize, state policies regulating beverages sold in middle schools were associated with reduced in-school sugar-sweetened beverage access and purchasing only if they banned all sugar-sweetened beverages," the authors write. "Access and purchasing were equivalent in states that banned only soda compared with those with no policy at all. However, even comprehensive sugar-sweetened beverage policies were not associated with overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which was largely independent of students' in-school sugar-sweetened beverage access."

"Our study adds to a growing body of literature that suggests that to be effective, school-based policy interventions must be comprehensive," the authors conclude. "States that only ban soda, while allowing other beverages with added caloric sweeteners, appear to be no more successful at reducing adolescents' sugar-sweetened beverage access and purchasing within school than states that take no action at all."

(AP) ? Coach Joe Paterno is fighting for his job amid "eroding" support from Penn State's board of trustees and a widening sex-abuse scandal and possible cover-up centered on former assistant and one-time heir apparent Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno's regularly scheduled news conference was abruptly canceled Tuesday. A university spokesman cited "ongoing legal circumstances," a reference to charges announced over the weekend that Sandusky molested eight young boys between 1994 and 2009, and that two PSU administrators who have since stepped aside failed to notify authorities of a 2002 incident reported by an eyewitness.

Late Tuesday night, the board said it would appoint a special committee to conduct an investigation into the "circumstances" that resulted in the indictments of Sandusky, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz. The committee will be appointed Friday at the board's regular meeting, which Gov. Tom Corbett said he plans to attend, and will examine "what failures occurred and who is responsible and what measures are necessary to ensure" similar mistakes aren't made in the future.

The board also promised those responsible would be held "fully accountable."

"We are committed to restoring public trust in the university," the board statement concluded.

At least a thousand students descended on the administration building about 11 p.m., EDT, chanting "Joe Paterno!" over and over, along with Penn State cheers. Many held up their smartphones to take photos or simply light up the night. A few young men climbed flag poles.

About 10 police officers stood on the steps of the building, guarding it.

Paterno's son, Scott, said his father was disappointed over the decision by PSU President Graham Spanier to cancel the news conference. Addressing reporters outside his parents' house, Scott said Joe was prepared to answer questions about Sandusky ? who maintains he is innocent ? and further that his father plans to coach not only Saturday's game against Nebraska, but for the long haul.

Hundreds of fans staged a raucous rally outside Paterno's home. He appeared briefly, along with some family members, and thanked the crowd for coming.

"It's hard for me to say how much this means," the 84-year-old coach said. "I've lived for this place. I've lived for people like you guys and girls."

Asked if he was still the coach, Paterno didn't answer but a young woman who stood with her arm around him replied: "Now is not the time."

As he returned to his house, Paterno stopped and pumped his fists above his head, yelling, "We are ..."

"Penn State!" the crowd replied.

"We're always going to be Penn State," Paterno said. "I'm proud of you. I've always been proud of you. Beat Nebraska."

At an afternoon practice, managers hastily put plywood boards over an exposed fence to block photographers' view of the field.

Paterno, who earns about $1 million annually from the school, has been head coach for 46 years and part of the Penn State staff for more than six decades, and his old-school values pervade every corner of the program.

Over that span, the Nittany Lions won two national championships, but unlike many other Division I powerhouses, the program avoided run-ins with the NCAA. The team generates millions of dollars each year in revenues from attendance, TV rights and sponsorships, but it has stubbornly stuck with the basic white-and-blue uniforms that are now among the most recognizable in college football.

All those things have inspired pride in the region and fierce loyalty to Paterno, who is the winningest coach in Division I and one of the most respected in any sport. That lofty status, however, has been the subject of heated arguments in recent days, among students on campus, construction workers on the street and the PSU board of trustees.

A person familiar with the trustees' discussions said support there for Paterno was "eroding," but couldn't gauge whether the board would take action. The same person said Spanier has also lost support ahead of Friday's board meeting. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

While praising Spanier's tenure at Penn State, an official of the American Council on Education, said, "The central issue for the board, which is charged with preserving and protecting the institution, is not the rearview mirror."

"It's the institution going forward," added Terry Hartle, senior vice president at the council, the main umbrella organization representing colleges and universities nationally.

Much of the criticism surrounding Paterno has concerned his apparent failure to follow up on a report of the 2002 incident, in which Sandusky allegedly sodomized a 10-year-old boy in the showers at the team's football complex. The eyewitness, Mike McQueary, is currently receivers coach for the team but was a graduate assistant at the time.

McQueary told Paterno about the incident the next day, and the coach notified Curley and Schultz, who in turn notified Spanier. Curley and Schultz have been charged with perjury and failure to report the incident to authorities, as required by state law.

Both men, as well as Paterno, testified that they were told that Sandusky behaved inappropriately in that 2002 incident, but not to the extent of McQueary's graphic account to a state grand jury.

The same grand jury decided the testimony from Curley and Schultz, whose job at the time also gave him oversight of the campus police, were not believable. Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said Paterno is not a target of the investigation, although the state police commissioner has chastised him and other Penn State officials for not doing enough to try to stop the suspected abuse.

"As you know, the kids that were the victims, I think we ought to say a prayer for them," Paterno said Tuesday night.

Sandusky, 67, spent three decades on the Penn State staff before retiring in 1999, but continued to use school and athletic facilities ? where prosecutors allege he molested several of the boys ? as recently as two weeks ago. He often held football camps for youths on PSU satellite campuses and maintained an office at the Nittany Lions' complex on the main campus.

Sandusky began working with at-risk youths after founding The Second Mile charity in 1977. It now raises and spends several million dollars each year for its programs. According to Internal Revenue Service documents, the foundation last paid Sandusky in 2007, when he received $57,000 as a consultant. He publicly severed ties in 2010.

Paterno is listed on The Second Mile's website as a current member of its honorary board of directors, a group that includes business executives, golfing great Arnold Palmer and several NFL Hall of Famers and coaches, including retired Pittsburgh Steelers stars Jack Ham and Franco Harris.

Meanwhile, another potential victim has contacted authorities.

The man, now an adult, contacted the department on Sunday after seeing media accounts of Sandusky's arrest, Lt. David Young at the Montoursville station said. Investigators took a statement from him and forwarded it to the Rockview station for officers there to pursue, Young said.

U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan of Pennsylvania said Tuesday he's asked Education Secretary Arne Duncan to look into whether the university violated the Clery Act, which requires schools to publish an annual report of all criminal offenses that are reported to campus security or local police.

Dolphins will continue investing in Jimmy Wilson ? Miami Dolphins ...

Jimmy Wilson is the Miami Dolphins top rated cornerback.

Expect Jimmy Wilson to start against the Chiefs.

That?s right. The team?s seventh-round pick, who has been scored on twice in his limited snaps with the base defense this season, has been the top coverage guy for a bad defense that?s allowing opposing quarterbacks to produce a 103.1 QB rating.

That?s right folks. According to ProFootballFocus.com, which rates players based on their snaps, Wilson, a rookie from Montana, has outperformed Vontae Davis, Sean Smith and Will Allen.

While the bad plays ? like the game winning touchdown he allowed against Cleveland, and the one he gave up against the Giants in the closing minute of the first half last week ? stick out like a sore thumb, truth is Wilson?s had more good plays than bad.

?What we like about Jimmy is he?s a competitive guy. He shows up and gives it his all,? defensive coordinator Mike Nolan said of Wilson, who has contributed eight tackles, one interception and is tied for the team lead with four pass deflections.??As cornerbacks go he?s a little bit of an over achiever. He?s tough as hell and tackles well.?

Nolan said he?s been pleased with Wilson, who received his first start last week against the Giants, and plans to continue investing in him.

It appears Wilson will start against Kansas City today because Davis has been declared out for disciplinary measures. So today we?ll see how much Wilson has learned from his Giants experience.

?He?s fighting his tale off out there for us and you have to appreciate that,? Nolan said. ?In the case of winning a game he helps us.?

Ethan Zohn, Outrunning Cancer At New York City Marathon

Former "Survivor" winner Ethan Zohn proved that he can take anything in stride at the ING New York City Marathon Sunday when he finished the 26.2-mile race at a 4:20:46 run time. The race, Zohn's second, was made more emotional by the recent news that Zohn was once again battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, which had returned to his chest on September 14th, according to People magazine. "I don't want fear or cancer to define me, but it's always in the back of your mind," he told the publication.

That triumph of mind was made clear yesterday when Zohn -- a cofounder of Grassroot Soccer and host of ABC's "Everyday Health" -- completed the run with girlfriend (and fellow "Survivor" winner) Jenna Morasca rooting for him on the sidelines. "I never have any doubt that he's going to overcome any obstacles he's presented with," she told People.

Grassroots Soccer is an official charity partner of the marathon; it lists its mission statement online as "a world mobilized through soccer to create an AIDS free generation."

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated that Zohn proposed to Jenna Morasca, after their time together on "Survivor." They are not engaged.

The remaining positions leave Jefferies with net exposure of $59 million, or 1.7 percent of its shareholder equity, according to the statement.

Jefferies said the transactions resulted in "no meaningful profit or loss."

"We undertook this reduction in our holdings solely to demonstrate the liquid nature of this market-making trading book," the company said.

The statement was the fifth Jefferies has issued about its sovereign debt since MF Global filed for bankruptcy on October 31. The MF Global bankruptcy raised concerns about some investment banks being small enough that governments will allow them to fail without jeopardizing the financial system.

Jefferies shares were up 1 percent at $12.20 shortly before noon in New York Stock Exchange trading.

Jefferies had $45 billion of assets at the end of August, about 5 percent as much as Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N).

Ventura, miffed by court, says he's off to Mexico

Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura is so upset by the dismissal of his airport security lawsuit that he threatened Friday to apply for dual citizenship so he can spend more time in his beloved Mexico ? or run for president of what he labeled "the Fascist States of America."

Ventura sued the federal government in January, alleging that airport scans and pat-downs amounted to unreasonable search and seizure. A district judge in St. Paul threw out his lawsuit Thursday, ruling it should have been filed in a Circuit Court of Appeals.

Outside the federal courthouse in St. Paul, with a crew from his "Conspiracy Theory" cable TV show filming, Ventura said he hadn't decided whether to continue pressing his lawsuit. He said he wanted to make his case before a jury not a panel of judges.

Ventura has said a titanium hip implanted in him in 2008 sets off metal detectors and that agents previously used hand-held wands to scan his body. He said he was subjected to a body pat-down after an airport metal detector went off last November. Ventura said he hasn't flown since and won't fly commercially again.

Ventura, a political independent who served one term as governor, teased that he might have to run for president to change the policy and a court system he regards as broken. Moments later, he vowed to apply for Mexican citizenship so he can live there more months of the year.

The former Navy SEAL said he had lost his patriotism.

"I will never stand for a national anthem again. I will turn my back and I will raise a fist," he said.

White House: Too soon to write off U.S. debt panel (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The White House still has hopes for a congressional deal to cut the U.S. budget deficit, despite a looming November 23 deadline and low expectations from the 12-member "super committee" charged with making a deal.

Many in Washington are growing increasingly pessimistic about the prospects for an agreement among the Democratic and Republican lawmakers on the special budget panel.

But White House budget director Jack Lew said on Wednesday he has been in regular contact with the panel's members and viewed such prognostications as premature.

"I think that we have a habit in Washington of trying to write obituaries while the patient is still fighting," Lew said at a Politico Playbook breakfast. "I do live my life as an optimist."

With the panel's deadline for reaching an agreement only three weeks away, there is no visible sign yet of a plan or even the outline of one.

On Wednesday, Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives, described expectations for the super committee's success as low.

The legislation that established the panel of six Democrats and six Republicans requires agreement on at least $1.2 trillion in budget savings over 10 years to avoid setting off automatic budget "triggers" that would force deep cuts in both domestic and defense programs.

Revenue increases are at the heart of the super committee's logjam. Democrats insist they must be part of any deficit reduction deal but Republicans are so far sticking to their resistance to higher taxes.

Under a separate process, the U.S. Congress -- where Republicans control the House and Democrats have a majority in the Senate -- also must agree on bills to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year that started October 1.

A bill was passed in early October to keep the government funded temporarily but that expires on November 18.

Asked if he was worried about a government shutdown if Congress cannot pass the bills at the end of the year, Lew said he was hopeful that could be avoided.

"There is a risk," he said. "There's no doubt that this could become another one those ideological conflicts. It shouldn't."

Private sector adds jobs, layoffs slow in October (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. private employers added more jobs than expected last month, while planned layoffs dropped sharply, underscoring the view the economy is on a path of slow growth.

The ADP National Employment Report showed on Wednesday the economy's private sector added 110,000 jobs in October, topping economists' expectations for a gain of 101,000 jobs. ADP also increased September's job additions, to a gain of 116,000 from the previously reported 91,000.

The report is jointly developed with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC.

While the data was encouraging, economists said it pointed to a sluggish recovery in the labor market rather than robust growth.

"It portrays a job market that's improved a bit since earlier in the summer. But we're still not generating the kind of job growth that's going to be enough to bring down the unemployment rate quickly," said David Resler, chief economist at Nomura Securities in New York.

The ADP figures come ahead of the government's much more comprehensive labor market report on Friday, which includes both public and private sector employment.

That report is expected to show a rise in overall nonfarm payrolls of 95,000 last month, based on a Reuters poll of analysts, and a rise in private payrolls of 120,000. The unemployment rate is seen holding steady at 9.1 percent.

Economists often refer to the ADP report to fine-tune their expectations for the payrolls numbers, though it is not always accurate in predicting the outcome. Analysts said the release would not likely prompt major readjustments to Friday's forecasts.

The data came as the Federal Reserve was convening for the second day of its policy-setting meeting with a statement due later in the day. The central bank is expected to take a breather from monetary stimulus measures and will give an update on its economic forecast.

Fears the U.S. economy could be heading for another recession have ebbed in recent months as growth accelerated in the third quarter after a weak first-half performance.

Wall Street stock indexes opened more than 1 percent higher. Investors were largely focused on a meeting between Greece's prime minister and the leaders of Germany and France as the Greek government said a referendum on a bailout package would be held "as soon as possible." [ID:nL5E7M20N5]

The gains in the ADP report came from small and medium-size businesses, which added 58,000 and 53,000 jobs, respectively. Large businesses shed 1,000 positions.

Earlier on Wednesday a separate report showed the number of planned layoffs at U.S. firms dropped in October after hitting a more than 2-year high the month before, while seasonal positions pushed hiring plans sharply higher.

Employers announced 42,759 planned job cuts last month, tumbling 63.1 percent from 115,730 the month before, according to the report from consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. It was the lowest level in four months.

Hiring plans surged to 159,177 jobs last month from 76,551 in September as companies announced seasonal positions. Retail jobs led the way with 133,940 openings.

In housing data, applications for U.S. home mortgages were little changed last week as purchase demand improved but refinancing activity stagnated, an industry group said.

The Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted gauge of loan requests for home purchases rose 1.8 percent, while the index of refinancing applications was off 0.2 percent. The overall index of mortgage application activity edged up 0.2 percent

Workings of molecular motor revealed

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2011) ? The structure and function of a 'molecular motor' critical to the functioning of human organs and, when malfunctioning, implicated in cancer, kidney failure, and osteoporosis, has been revealed in unprecedented detail.

An international team, led by chemists from Oxford University, has used highly sensitive mass-spectrometry to piece together a picture of how the motor, the energy-converting protein adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase, interacts with the fatty acids that form the membranes around our cells.

The team publish a report of the research in this week's Science.

'ATP synthase is found in every cell in our bodies and generates the energy necessary to keep our organs working,' said Professor Carol Robinson of Oxford University's Department of Chemistry, an author of the paper. 'Our team were able to effectively 'weigh' this molecular motor and calculate the exact weight of the fatty acids -- that act rather like a 'lubricant' for the motor -- that are attached to it.'

The researchers probed ATP synthase and its various component parts by stimulating it with high pH and different levels of ATP and Adenosine diphosphate (ADP). They were then able to watch how the different parts of this molecular motor responded and interacted in the kind of detail nobody has seen before

The team believe their discovery will be extremely important for future research into a wide range of diseases in which defects in such energy-converting machinery plays a part.

Professor Robinson said: 'Overall this research has not only contributed to our understanding of this cellular motor but also highlights opportunities to explore the effects of inhibitors that could one day help in the treatment of many conditions.'

Officials: Lohan may be in jail for just hours

A judge made Lindsay Lohan's world a lot smaller Wednesday, ordering the long-troubled actress confined to a jail cell for 30 days and to the state of California when she is released.

The sentence by Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner was aimed at keeping close tabs on Lohan, who acknowledged she recently violated court orders by getting booted from a community service assignment at a women's shelter.

Lohan has been in court numerous times since her legal problems began in 2007 with a drunken driving case.

Sautner warned the actress that more time behind bars awaited if she messed up again.

Story: Michael Lohan denied bail in Florida

In reality, however, the initial 30-day sentence will be significantly shortened by jail overcrowding, and sheriff's officials said she may only be at the jail for a few hours. In 2007, the actress spent 84 minutes at the jail before being released, and in the past she has served about 20 percent of her sentence, which is roughly six days. The actual length of the term will be set by the Sheriff's Department, which oversees county lockups.

The 25-year-old actress has until Nov. 9 to report for her jail term, and Sautner ruled she cannot serve house arrest, as she did previously this year.

The sentence also requires Lohan to perform community service assignments at the county morgue, undergo psychotherapy sessions, and appear monthly at court hearings between December and March.

The judge also said Lohan can no longer leave the country and needs the permission of her new "no-nonsense" probation officer to travel outside California.

In recent months, Lohan has been jet-setting, appearing in New York during Fashion Week and overseas for modeling gigs.

If Lohan fails to follow the terms imposed by the judge, she will be sent to jail for 270 days, Sautner said, explaining the approach was known as "putting the keys to the jail in the defendant's hands."

In court, the actress, wearing a polka-dotted dress, spoke only to acknowledge she understood the terms of her sentence.

Similar arrangements with Lohan have failed. A year ago, a judge in Beverly Hills sent her to rehab until January and told her if she stayed out of trouble, she would no longer be court-monitored and would be free to leave Los Angeles.

It was not to be. At rehab, Lohan was accused of battery on a worker, although charges were never filed. Within three weeks of her release, Lohan was accused of taking a $2,500 necklace without permission and eventually pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor theft charge.

Sautner then sentenced Lohan to four months in jail in the theft case. The term, however, was reduced to 35 days on house arrest due to jail overcrowding ? an outcome that led the judge at a recent hearing to express exasperation with the actress and California's cash-strapped jail system.

Sautner said Wednesday she would not hesitate to return Lohan to jail for nearly nine months if she failed again and laid out strict guidelines for her freedom.

Lohan will have to serve 423 hours at the county morgue, where for nearly two weeks she has been mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and washing dirty sheets. She will also have to attend 18 psychotherapy sessions between now and March after missing several in recent months.

The judge noted that Lohan's popularity in certain circles is low, saying another women's shelter refused to accept her for a community service assignment because she was considered a bad example for the women.

Lohan's previous probation officer also wanted off the case, and the new officer is under orders to immediately report any violations directly to Sautner.

The actress has now been sentenced to county jail five times since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007, and each of her incarcerations has been shortened due to overcrowding.

Her current court troubles came after she was terminated from the shelter program after failing to show up nine times at the center. She told her probation officer the assignment was not fulfilling, according to a probation report. Sautner had sent Lohan to the facility in downtown Los Angeles, thinking that it might benefit the actress.

Story: Lohan buys cupcakes, In-N-Out for morgue volunteers

Now the judge says all of Lohan's community service hours will be spent at the morgue.

That assignment has not been without drama. She was turned away the first day after showing up 40 minutes late but has shown up early several times since then. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter declined Tuesday to characterize how Lohan's service was progressing.

Sautner told Lohan that the coroner's office was unhappy with her posting Twitter updates about her experience and that she should stop. In turn, the judge said she told the agency not to hold any press conferences about Lohan, as they had done on the day she was turned away.

Lohan's probation on her four-year-old drunken driving case was extended until March, and she remains on probation in the necklace theft case until 2014.

Sautner said the restrictions may be lifted early if Lohan completes her service and counseling before the court's deadlines.

(AP) ? Lots of people complain about the shortcomings of the country's two-party system for picking a president. Now a nonpartisan group is gathering millions of petition signatures ? and dollars ? to offer people a Plan B.

Americans Elect, which grew out of a failed 2008 effort to provide an alternative in the presidential race, aims to secure a slot on the November ballot in all 50 states for a to-be-determined candidate who would be nominated in the nation's first online convention next summer.

The group, whose backers include both Republicans and Democrats anxious to open up the political process, has raised $22 million so far and secured ballot slots in Florida, Alaska, Nevada, Kansas, Arizona and Michigan. It has submitted signatures for certification in California, Utah and Hawaii.

Americans Elect, whose slogan is "pick a president, not a party," appears to be on track to secure ballot access across the country, with 1.9 million signatures collected so far. But how it will effect the 2012 race depends on what kind of candidate its delegates select in next June's online convention, which will be open to any registered voter.

"It's a fascinating experiment in trying to empower the disenfranchised center in American politics," says Will Marshall, one of the group's leaders and the president of the Progressive Policy Institute, a centrist Democratic think tank. "It uses the power of the Internet and social media to provide a new means for political participation."

Even Marshall admits, though, that he approaches the effort with some trepidation.

"I'd hate to see a scenario in which a vibrant third choice in some way threw the 2012 election to a right-winger like a Rick Perry or a Michele Bachmann," he says.

Americans Elect rejects the notion its candidate could turn out to be a spoiler and says that putting the choice in the hands ? or clicks ? of millions of registered voters will ensure the selection of a qualified nominee. Leading candidates for the group's nomination will be required to choose a running mate who is not from their own party to ensure political balance, it says.

Mark McKinnon, a GOP strategist who advised George W. Bush in his presidential campaign, says he got involved in the effort because "the system is broken and the traditional parties are only making a bad situation worse." He sees the Americans Elect effort as a reimagining of democracy and how the country selects its leaders.

Getting on the ballot in all 50 states isn't all that unusual: The New Alliance Party's Lenora Fulani did in 1988. The Libertarians have done in multiple times. But none of them garnered a big share of the vote.

Other outsider candidates have been more successful: Ross Perot got 19 percent of the vote in 1992 and 8 percent in 1996; John Anderson, 7 percent in 1980: and George Wallace, 13 percent in 1968. Ralph Nader drew just 3 percent of the vote as a Green Party candidate in 2000, but that included enough liberal votes in Florida to keep Democrat Al Gore from carrying the state and becoming president.

Richard Winger, editor and publisher of Ballot Access News, says the idea that an Americans Elect candidate can't win shouldn't be dismissed outright. There are hundreds of instances of minor candidates being elected to state legislatures, and even a few members of Congress, he says.

And Matt Miller, a fellow at the Democratic-leaning Center for American Progress, says the effort doesn't have to produce a president to have a big impact on national politics.

Perot's strong following in 1992 pushed deficit reduction onto Bill Clinton's agenda when he became president, Miller says.

Ileana Wachtel, a spokeswoman for Americans Elect, says the group is on track to meet its fundraising goal of $30 million. It has collected money from about 3,000 individual small donors and 100 large donors, who aren't required to reveal their identities. Many, she says, "are tied to one of the parties and do not want to deal with recriminations from supporting this alternative." The group, whose leadership includes a number of names from corporate America, accepts no money from special interests or political action committees.

The process of drafting candidates won't begin until December.

Rajaratnam's prison date changes to Dec. 5 - judge (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Convicted hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam will report to prison on Dec. 5 to begin serving his 11-year prison sentence for insider trading, a U.S. judge ruled on Monday, extending his liberty by a week.

Rajaratnam, 54, had previously been scheduled to go to prison on Nov. 28. No reason for the change was given in a written order by U.S. District Judge Richard Holwell.

The judge imposed sentence on Oct. 13 after the Galleon Group multimillionaire founder was convicted in May by a federal jury on 14 criminal charges of insider trading. Sri Lankan-born Rajaratnam was the central figure in a broad government crackdown using FBI phone taps.

His lawyers have asked the Federal Bureau of Prisons to send him to a facility in Butner, North Carolina, where his health problems, including complications from diabetes, can be treated.

It is the same prison where epic swindler Bernard Madoff, 73, is serving a life sentence for running a decades-long investment fraud of tens of billions of dollars.

The case is USA v Raj Rajaratnam et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 09-01184.

$8 million luxury iPad 2 comes with diamonds and dinosaur bones (Yahoo! News)

Stuart Hughes gives Apple's tablet a makeover that will break the bank

Apple's iPad line may be the most popular consumer tablets in the world, but for the world's richest individuals, the iPad 2's sleek and simple design just doesn't cut it. For those folks, luxury afficianado Stuart Hughes is here to help, and his company has created what is undoubtedly the most expensive tablet ever. It's called the iPad 2 Gold History Edition, and while you won't likely be able to afford it, the fact that it even exists should be enough to make your jaw drop.

To craft the ridiculously expensive tablet, Hughes starts with a 3G-equipped iPad 2. The standard aluminum back panel is then replaced with one formed out of solid 24ct gold, weighing approximately 70 ounces. The default black Apple logo is kicked to the curb in favor of 24ct gold version covered in 53 separate diamonds.

The iPad 2 before its stunning makeover

Turning attention to the front of the device, the bezel that surrounds the screen is swapped with one made of?ammolite, one of the rarest rocks on the planet. Ammolite was made over millions of years from the remains of prehistoric mollusks called ammonites. The Ammolite produces a bright, rainbow-colored sheen that gives the tablet a one-of-a-kind look, but Hughes isn't done yet.

To really set the Gold History Edition apart from other luxury slates, the company takes actual Tyrannosaurus rex thigh bones and shaves them into the finish.?To top it all off, the iPad's iconic home button gets a facelift. The tiny black sphere is replaced with a platinum base studded with 12 outer diamonds and a single 8.5ct centerpiece.

The Gold History Edition isn't the first insanely luxurious gadget that the company has produced, and gilded iPads are available from a number of producers. However, it appears great lengths were taken to make this new offering stand out from the rest of the pack ? and it shows in the staggering $8 million price tag. If you're one of the lucky few who have that kind of cash burning a hole in your bank vault, you better hurry; just two of the lavish tablets are being produced, and they are first-come, first-served.

UN cultural agency grants membership to Palestine

Palestine became a full member of the U.N. cultural and educational agency Monday, in a highly divisive move that the United States and other opponents say could harm renewed Mideast peace efforts.

U.S. lawmakers had threatened to withhold roughly $80 million in annual funding to UNESCO if it approved Palestinian membership. The United States provides about 22 percent of UNESCO's funding.

Huge cheers went up in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization after delegates approved the membership in a vote of 107-14 with 52 abstentions. Eighty-one votes were needed for approval in a hall with 173 UNESCO member delegations present.

"Long Live Palestine!" shouted one delegate, in French, at the unusually tense and dramatic meeting of UNESCO's General Conference.

While the vote has large symbolic meaning, the issue of borders of an eventual Palestinian state, security troubles and other disputes that have thwarted Middle East peace for decades remain unresolved.

Palestinian officials are seeking full membership in the United Nations, but that effort is still under examination and the U.S. has said it will veto it unless there is a peace deal with Israel. Given that, the Palestinians separately sought membership at Paris-based UNESCO and other U.N. bodies.

Monday's vote is definitive. The membership formally takes effect when Palestine signs UNESCO's founding charter.

The U.S. ambassador to UNESCO, David Killion, said Monday's vote will "complicate" U.S. efforts to support the agency. The United States voted against the measure.

Israel's ambassador to UNESCO, Nimrod Barkan, called the vote a tragedy.

"UNESCO deals in science, not science fiction," he said. "They forced on UNESCO a political subject out of its competence."

"They've forced a drastic cut in contributions to the organization," he said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton last week called UNESCO's deliberation "inexplicable," saying discussion of Palestinian membership in international organizations couldn't replace negotiations with Israel as a fast-track toward Palestinian independence.
