Late for work, officer accused of going 120 mph

A Miami police officer is accused of driving 120 mph on a turnpike because he was late for his off-duty job working security at a school.

    1. C'mon ? what's not to like?

Hoof it over to Facebook to join the weird news herd.

The Florida Highway Patrol says officer Fausto Lopez was arrested at gunpoint after leading police on a brief high-speed chase.

According to a police report, a trooper spotted a patrol car changing lanes in a dangerous manner earlier this month. The report says the patrol car ignored warnings to pull over and led a brief high-speed chase before stopping near Hollywood.

Miami police spokesman Delrish Moss told The Associated Press on Saturday that administrative action against Lopez depends on the outcome of the case.

Univision first reported the arrest.

Peter Jackson trying to aid ex-US death row inmate (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? Director Peter Jackson said Friday that he was working with a high-profile former American death row inmate in hopes of getting the man a complete pardon.

Jackson, best known for his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, said he received an exemption to New Zealand law to allow Damien Echols to visit him. Echols was part of a group known as the West Memphis Three who were convicted of killing three boys in the U.S. state of Arkansas in 1993. He and the other two men were released in August after pleading guilty to lesser charges and insist they are innocent.

At a news conference Friday in which Jackson stood alongside New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at the North Island set where Jackson is filming a two-part version of "The Hobbit," the director said he'd gone through the same process open to everyone in applying for an exemption to immigration laws.

"There are all sorts of emotive headlines about Damien Echols, killer, coming to New Zealand, but the reality is that Damien Echols is an innocent man who has spent 18 years incarcerated in a tiny cell," Jackson said.

The director told reporters that he and partner Fran Walsh had worked for seven or eight years to try and help free Echols.

"He's come here to work with us on a couple of things," Jackson said. "We're doing investigative work, we're doing forensic work ... with the purpose of getting a complete pardon."

Jackson clarified that Echols was not taking part in work on "The Hobbit."

Echols is one of the highest-profile death row inmates to be released in the U.S. Three HBO documentaries about his case brought national attention and sparked the involvement of several celebrities, including Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder.

Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley ? who were teenagers at the time ? were convicted of killing three 8-year-old boys who were found naked and tied in a drainage ditch in the Arkansas town of West Memphis. The case hinged on the testimony of witnesses who said they'd heard the teens talk about the killings.

Echols was the only one sentenced to death.

In 2007, lawyers representing Echols claimed that new DNA tests taken from the crime scene didn't match any of the men. In August, the men agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges and were released immediately for time served ? all the while publicly maintaining their innocence.

PFT: Vick says Eagles ignore Rob Ryan's talk

Chicago Bears v Tampa Bay BuccaneersGetty Images

We?re checking in with teams as they hit their bye week. ?Or at least we are trying to.

Next up: The Chicago Bears.

Familiar position

Lovie Smith told everyone to calm down after the team?s loss to the Lions on Monday Night Football in Week 5. ?He pointed out that if the team could beat the Vikings and Bucs, they would be 4-3 just like last year at the bye.

Give Smith credit: That?s exactly what happened. ?After a?tumultuous?training camp and start to the season, the Bears are in decent enough shape.

The Bears season has a different feel to it after two strong efforts. They completely destroyed Minnesota, and controlled the action against the Bucs in London.

The Bears have proven capable of beating mediocre competition. They can?t beat the best NFC teams: The Packers, Saints, and Lions all have wins over Chicago.

Forte leads the way

Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL. ?Matt Forte may be the most important to his team. ?Forte leads all players by a wide margin in yards from scrimmage with 1,091. ?He is just off Chris Johnson?s all time yards from scrimmage record pace.

It?s hard to overstate how good Forte is as a receiver. He has a shot to be the first running back since Marshall Faulk to put up over 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. It?s no coincidence Mike Martz was involved in both seasons.

Improving passing game

Jay Cutler may have enjoyed the best two game stretch of his Bears career in the loss to the Lions and the win over the Vikings. He is looking more comfortable. His pass protection has improved from absymal to simply lame.

The offense still has to be more consistent after some early ugly outings, but it?s headed in the right direction. It?s 12th in scoring despite the 21 sacks Cutler has taken. The team has a +4 turover margin.

Safety dance

Chris Harris started the season at strong safety; he was released Thursday. Brandon Meriweather was signed for $3.25 million and now sits on the bench. The team is going young with Major Wright and Chris Conte at the position. ?This is a shaky secondary overall.

Average defense

Lovie Smith teams are supposed to be built on defense. At this stage, the Bears have been ordinary stopping opponents. Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher are still playing at a high level, but they don?t get a lot of help. The defensive line has been decent. Julius Peppers has played at less than 100%.

Chicago?s only chance to make a postseason push is for the defense to improve dramatically.

Angling for a wild card

The Bears are three games back in the NFC North, so their only hope for a playoff spot is a wild card. They are in decent shape with wins over NFC contenders like Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

The next two weeks after the bye are huge. ?The Bears travel to Philadelphia before hosting Detroit. Sweeping those two games would put Chicago in terrific position before an oddly timed four-game tour through the AFC West.

After seven weeks, the Bears are in the mix. Their recent play indicates we?ll probably be talking about Bears tiebreakers come late December.

'Grand Theft Auto V' is coming ... to Los Angeles?

Rockstar Games

"Grand Theft Auto V" is in the works. But where will gamers get to live out their crime-filled fantasies this time?

By Winda Benedetti

Good news virtual gangsters: Rockstar Games has officially revealed via its website that the next installment in its famed "Grand Theft Auto" franchise is underway.

Rockstar has yet to unveil any information about "Grand Theft Auto V"?? only that it will be releasing a trailer for the game on Nov. 2. However, game site Kotaku?reports that?"a source familiar with the game" told them it will take place in some version of Los Angeles.

Kotaku also reports that multiple sources have told them "GTA V" will feature more than just one playable character. (And for the record, Kotaku is often right when it comes to the rumor/anonymous source department.)

It's been three years since we've had an all-new console/PC installment in the controversial and ground-breaking "Grand Theft Auto" franchise, renowned for its gritty, crime-filled stories and epic, open-world gameplay. The superb "GTA IV" launched in 2008 and its two downloadable episodes?? "The Lost and the Damned" and "The Ballad of Gay Tony"?? arrived in 2009. 2009 also gave us "GTA: Chinatown Wars" for the handheld game machines.

Rockstar Games

Gamers visited Los Santos - a virtual version of Los Angeles - back in 2004's "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." Will we be making a return trip for "GTA V"?

For months now, rumors have been circulating that Rockstar was hard at work on an all-new game. Of course, the question is: When will we actually get to play it?

In June, GameSpot reported that anonymous sources had told them "GTA V" would likely launch sometime in 2012. But many game reviewers and pundits are now wondering if we might not see "GTA V" launch later than that?? perhaps not until there are new Xbox and PlayStation machines to power it.

Live Poll

In which city would you like to see the next 'Grand Theft Auto' game play out?

One thing seems certain?? as is the "Grand Theft Auto" style, the next installment is sure to offer players a vast and detailed world with a?crime-filled underbelly to explore. But where will we be living out our?nefarious fantasies?

Previous installments in the "GTA" franchise have taken place in virtual cities based on real-world counterparts???Vice City in?"GTA: Vice City Stories" was based on Miami, Liberty City in "GTA IV" was based on New York and Los Santos from "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" was based on Los Angeles.

Looks like on Nov. 2, we'll find out if the City of Angels goes to the devil again.

(Thanks to Kotaku for the heads up.)

(AP) ? Market turmoil during the summer helped push online investment broker TD Ameritrade Holding Corp's fiscal fourth-quarter profit up 44 percent.

The Omaha, Neb.-based company said Tuesday that it earned $163.7 million, or 29 cents per share, in the three months ended Sept. 30. That compares with $114 million, or 20 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

There were 2 percent fewer shares outstanding in the most recent quarter, the result of company buybacks.

Revenue rose 16 percent to $703.5 million, from $608.8 million last year.

The results fell short of Wall Street projections. Analysts, on average, had forecast profit of 31 cents per share, on revenue of $713.6 million, according to data provided by FactSet.

The July-to-September quarter, the worst in the markets since the 2008 economic crisis, saw average client trades per day of 415,739, up 31 percent from 317,684 per day last year.

Total trades reached 26.6 million for the period, up from 20.3 million. The average commissions and fees per trade slid 4 percent to $11.85.

TD Ameritrade said it saw 150,000 new accounts opened during the quarter, for a total of 5.6 million funded accounts. The company ended its fiscal year with a net gain of 162,000 accounts from the same period a year ago.

New client assets reached $12.4 billion during the period, which the company says translates to an annualized growth rate of 12 percent.

For the full fiscal year, TD Ameritrade earned $637.8 million, or $1.11 per share, up 8 percent from $592.2 million, or $1 per share, for fiscal 2010.

The company says it expects to earn between $1 and $1.35 per share for its next fiscal year. That range encompasses the $1.20 per share annual profit forecast by analysts.

Libya "liberated" but Gaddafi still unburied (Reuters)

MISRATA, Libya (Reuters) ? A day after Libyans declared a "liberation" that consigned Muammar Gaddafi to the "garbage bin of history," hundreds again filed past his rotting corpse in a grim display that has raised questions about the nation's new direction.

With their Western allies expressing quiet unease that Gaddafi was battered and shot after his capture on Thursday, then put on show for days in a market cold store, the rebel factions which ended his 42-year rule were still wrangling over the body, amid wider negotiations on dividing up power.

The killing of the 69-year-old in his hometown of Sirte ended a nervous, two-month hiatus since the motley rebel forces of the National Transitional Council overran the capital Tripoli and ended eight months of war -- though Gaddafi's son and heir-apparent Saif al-Islam is still at large.

The death of the fallen strongman allowed the NTC to trigger mass rejoicing by declaring Libya's long-awaited "liberation" on Sunday in Benghazi, the seat of the revolt. But it has also turned a harsh spotlight on a lack of control from the center over disparate armed groups and on jockeying for power among local commanders as negotiations begin in earnest to form an interim government that can run free elections.

"Leaders from different regions, cities, want to negotiate over everything -- posts in government, budgets for cities, dissolving militias," said one senior NTC official in Tripoli, though he defended this as a healthy expression of freedom.

"Is that not democracy?" he asked. "It would be unusual if they did not after Muammar favored only a few places for 40 years. There is no reason why it cannot be peaceful."

In Misrata, Libya's long-besieged third city whose war leaders are pushing for a big role in the peace, fighters handing out surgical masks against the stench were still ushering hundreds of sightseers into the chill room where the bodies of Gaddafi, his son Mo'tassim and his former army chief lay on the floor, their flesh darkening and leaking fluids.

BURIAL DELAY

Officials at one point declared the show was over, closed the gates and started turning people away. "That's enough," said one of the guards, "He's been causing us as much trouble dead as he did alive." But, within an hour, there was a change of plan as dozens more sightseers arrived and were shown in.

Nonetheless, the attempt to discourage more visitors may indicate progress on reaching a deal to bury the bodies.

The Islamic law that NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil said during Sunday's liberation announcement should be upheld in the new Libya would dictate a swift burial within the day.

But NTC officials said negotiations were going on with Gaddafi's tribal kinsmen from Sirte and within the interim leadership over where and how to dispose of the bodies, and on what the Misratans might receive in return for cooperation.

The killings near Sirte, after cellphone video footage was taken showing the captive Gaddafi being beaten and mocked by fighters apparently from Misrata, are also a matter of controversy -- at least outside Libya. The United Nations human rights arm has joined the Gaddafi family in seeking an inquiry.

Abdel Jalil told a news conference on Monday that the NTC had formed a committee to investigate. He also indicated that the interim authorities still held to an official line that Gaddafi may have been killed in "crossfire" with his own men, a view many NTC officials themselves seem ready to discount.

"Gaddafi was killed during the clashes with his supporters while arresting him," Abdel Jalil said, adding that whoever killed him may have had something to hide.

"Those who have an interest in killing him before prosecuting him are those who had an active role with him," said Abdel Jalil, who like many of the new leadership formerly held positions of authority under Gaddafi.

Adding to concerns about Libya turning over a new leaf on respect for individuals, New York-based Human Rights Watch called on the NTC to probe an "apparent mass execution" of 53 people, apparently Gaddafi supporters, whom it found dead, some with their hands bound, at a hotel in Sirte.

FEW QUALMS

Few Libyans seem troubled about either how Gaddafi and his entourage were killed or why they are being exposed for so long in what seemed a grim parody of the lying in state often reserved for national leaders.

"God made the pharaoh as an example to the others," said Salem Shaka, who was viewing the bodies in Misrata on Monday. "If he had been a good man, we would have buried him.

"But he chose this destiny for himself."

The killing of fallen autocrats is far from a novelty. In Europe in living memory, similar fates befell Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania in 1989 and Benito Mussolini, who had created modern Libya as an Italian colony a decade before he died in 1945.

However, some of the anti-Gaddafi rebels' Western allies have expressed disquiet about the treatment of Gaddafi after his capture and after his death and worry Libya's new leaders will not uphold their promise to respect human rights.

"They were not pleasant images," said British Prime Minister David Cameron, an early supporter of the rebellion.

"Everyone understands that is not what should have happened. It should have ended in a trial and should have ended in Gaddafi facing justice," Cameron told parliament in London.

In France, the other main driving force in NATO backing for the rebels, the foreign ministry was asked at a news briefing if there was concern about the future of democracy in Libya. An official noted that Abdel Jalil had spoken of "moderate" Islam:

"We are confident in the Libyan people, who have courageously set themselves free of 42 years of dictatorship, to construct a state of law, conforming to the principles and universal values shared by the international community," the ministry said. "We will be vigilant about human rights."

As their Tunisian and Egyptian neighbors whose uprisings inspired Libyans to rebel held or contemplated free elections, fellow Arabs also voiced distaste at Gaddafi's treatment, even though sympathy for the fallen strongman was in short supply.

"Forty-two dark years under a merciless dictator has naturally left the Libyan people very damaged," said Mahmoud Nofal, a 36-year-old bank employee in Cairo. "It has driven them mad for revenge. The rotting body is just emblematic of the rotten political and social environment under Gaddafi."

The NTC wants the bodies buried in a secret location to prevent the grave becoming a shrine for Gaddafi loyalists. But authorities in Misrata do not want them under their soil.

Five energy-savings myths (Y! Green)

image name
(Photo: Getty Images) What you didn't know about energy efficiency could hurt your pocketbook.

?

Myth #1: Closing the Vent Saves Energy Though it seems that closing vents in unused rooms would save energy, the energy consumed by the system is at the unit itself, and restricting conditioned air at a vent termination redirects it to other locations in the house or through leaks in your duct system. Closing vents also puts backpressure on the fan that pushes the air through the system, causing it to work harder, use more energy, and wear out faster.

?

Myth #2: New Windows = Significant Energy Cost Savings Replacing single-pane windows for Energy-Star rated dual-pane windows will save energy. That energy savings, however, is a function of the size and number of windows in your home, their orientation and overhangs, and the location of your house and the climate zone you are live in. This typically amounts to a small fraction of your total energy use, and given the expense of replacing windows, there are typically much more cost-effective ways to reduce your energy bills.?

?

Myth #3: Setting Thermostat Higher Heats a Home Faster A furnace will provide heat at its max power (or a fraction of max power for multi-stage units) when it is first turned on. So, setting the temperature higher will have little effect in how quickly a home heats. ?Setting the thermostat higher does have the potential to increase the run-time of the heating system, using more energy and potentially making your home uncomfortably hot.

?

Myth #4: Using an Electric Space Heater Saves Money Given that electricity is typically between four and 10 times the cost of natural gas, running just two electric space heaters can cost the equivalent of heating an entire home with a gas-powered system.

?

Myth #5: Leaving a Light on Uses Less Energy Than Turning It Off, Then on Again Some people actually believe that if leaving the light on when they leave the room for a few minutes to take a restroom break, for example, is better than turning it off and then on again when they return. There is no significant additional power draw when turning on a light bulb (other than the calories you use by flipping the switch). So, turn off the lights each time you leave a room, even if for just a couple of minutes.

US lawmakers seek tougher stance on China trade

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. House lawmakers are urging the administration to apply more pressure on what they call China's "predatory" trading practices, but show division on whether to pass legislation punishing China for manipulating its currency.

Members of the House committee that deals with trade presented a long list of grievances they say contribute to China's massive trade advantage, including its undervalued currency.

But committee chairman Dave Camp, a Republican, said currency should not be considered alone when there are so many other problems. The top Democrat on the panel, Sander Levin, says the House should take up legislation, passed by the Senate two weeks ago, that would threaten China with higher tariffs if it continues to undervalue its currency as a way of keeping its exports cheaper.

(AP) ? A red-tailed hawk that appears to have been shot in the head with a nail gun was captured in a San Francisco park and rushed to a wildlife center, a rescue group says.

The juvenile bird was trapped Saturday evening at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens, said Rebecca Dmytryk, executive director of the Monterey-based group WildRescue.

There was no immediate word on the bird's condition, but a photo of the capture shows the bird being held by a rescuer.

Dmytryk said it was immediately transported to Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley in San Jose, where specialists were staying late to receive it.

WildRescue had been notified of the injured bird nearly a week ago and had tried to trap it several times last week without success.

But observers got close enough to the bird to see the nail extending from its cheek through the front of its head. They said the hawk appeared to be in pain.

Dmytryk's group had been using a trap called a bal-chatri, a trap made of wire mesh, to try to catch the injured hawk.

Rescuers believe someone intentionally hurt the hawk earlier this month. A reward of $10,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever harmed the bird.

Mother: Formerly jailed American to leave Libya (AP)

BALTIMORE ? The mother of an American who was jailed in Libya for six months and then stayed on to join rebel fighters says her son will be coming home in a couple of weeks.

Sharon VanDyke tells The Baltimore Sun that she spoke with her son, Matthew VanDyke, Sunday morning. She says he was in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, and that he sounded fine (http://bsun.md/nPxbUo).

The 32-year-old VanDyke was captured in March by forces loyal to longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi and was freed by rebels in August.

Sharon VanDyke says her son wants to go back to Sirte, Gadhafi's hometown, where the longtime dictator was captured last week before being killed. She says Matthew will probably fly back to the United States from Cairo.

BERLIN (Reuters) ? German business sentiment slid for the fourth month in a row in October, dipping to its lowest level since mid-2010 and compounding fears the euro zone debt crisis could push Europe back into recession if a solution is not found soon.

The Munich-based Ifo economic think tank said on Friday that its closely-watched business climate index, based on a monthly survey of some 7,000 companies, fell to 106.4 in October from a revised 107.4 in September.

This was the lowest level since June 2010, albeit slightly better than the 106.3 forecast in a Reuters poll of 52 economists.

Market sentiment has been rocked this month by uncertainty about a bailout for Greece and fears the euro zone will fail to resolve its debt crisis, which could in turn spiral back into a banking crisis.

"Germany is heading for a home-made recession," said Berenberg Bank's Holger Schmieding. "Ever since Germany pressed for a restructuring of Greek debt in July without putting up a firewall to protect Italy against contagion, Ifo ... has tumbled amid severe financial turmoil."

Criticism of Germany has grown as its deep disagreements with France have indicated the euro zone will make scant progress on strengthening its bailout fund at a summit on Sunday.

German daily Financial Times Deutschland wrote on Friday the situation was turning into a farce and devoted its front page to a plea to leaders to get their acts together and "throw all their weight" at saving the common currency bloc.

France and Germany said in a joint statement on Thursday that European leaders would discuss a global solution to the crisis on Sunday but no decisions would be adopted before a second meeting to be held by Wednesday at the latest.

"Confidence and activity received a blow from the escalating sovereign debt crisis, which has spread to the banking industry and the real economy," said Aline Schuiling, senior economist at ABN AMRO Bank.

Germany's export-driven economy recovered swiftly from the 2008 financial crisis, outperforming its peers and providing a crucial growth engine for Europe.

But data increasingly suggest growth is easing due to a global slowdown and the euro zone's debt crisis. Industry output, orders and retail sales slumped in August.

Forward-looking indicators such as the Ifo business climate index point to a darkening outlook. Data this week also showed German investor morale dropping to its weakest level in nearly three years.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government nearly halved its forecast for growth next year to 1 percent on Thursday, catching up with other recent downwards revisions by think tanks.

An Ifo sub-index on current conditions fell to 116.7 from 117.9 in September, while the expectations reading dropped to 97.0, down from a revised 97.9 in September.

ECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS

Many economists said that, while sentiment was worsening as the euro zone crisis reached a critical stage, the real economy was still in good shape and well placed to weather the crisis -- for the time being.

"There is no denying that the German economy will cool off in coming quarters," said Andreas Rees of UniCredit.

"However ... doomsday is certainly not around the corner. Companies are still sitting on a huge pile of backlog orders which will be worked off in coming months."

The German government and most economic think tanks still see full-year 2011 growth of around 3 percent.

"The propensity of companies to invest further in Germany remained at historically high levels recently, at least partly offsetting declining impulses from exports," Rees added.

German bluechips have warned recently about the deteriorating outlook, while nonetheless reporting good business.

German retailer Metro AG (MEOG.DE) said on Thursday it was on track to beat last year's record profit of 2.4 billion euros ($3.3 billion euros).

Ifo economist Klaus Abberger told Reuters companies were pulling in their horns due to increasing cautiousness but still were not planning to cut jobs.

"They are bracing themselves for a period of weakness, so are reducing capacity levels for example to have a cushion," he said. "But they are not expecting a collapse."

Abberger nonetheless said the European Central Bank should cut its key interest rate to 1.0 percent, adding he expected this to happen in two stages.

Biogen MS trial data robust; shares jump (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Full data from a late-stage clinical trial of Biogen Idec Inc's experimental multiple sclerosis drug, BG-12, showed robust results across multiple measures and revealed no new safety concerns.

The news sent the biotech company's shares soaring as much as 6.7 percent on Friday.

Earlier this year the company released initial data from the trial, known as DEFINE, which showed the drug, when given twice a day, cut the annualized relapse rate by 53 percent at two years compared with placebo, and cut the rate of disability progression by 38 percent.

Full data from the trial was presented on Friday at a meeting of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) and showed the drug reduced the risk of relapse by 49 percent in patients who took it twice a day and 50 percent in patients who took it three times a day.

"BG-12 may be a valuable treatment option for MS patients, combining strong efficacy, a favorable safety profile and oral administration," said Dr. Ralf Gold, a trial investigator and professor at St. Josef-Hospital/Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany. "Preclinical research has shown that BG-12 has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects."

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system and can lead to numbness, loss of vision and paralysis. BG-12 is designed to treat relapsing-remitting MS, in which flare-ups are followed by periods of remission. About 85 percent of people with MS are initially diagnosed with this form of the disease.

Gold said that if the clinical responses seen in DEFINE are replicated later this year in a second late-stage trial known as CONFIRM, then "BG-12 has the potential to provide a new approach to treating MS and be an important step forward for patients."

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showed that at two years, patients receiving BG-12 experienced significant reduction in the number of brain lesions compared to patients on placebo.

"Coming out of Dr. Gold's presentation, BG12's clinical profile remains competitive with efficacy at the upper end of the range for all oral MS therapies," said Geoff Meacham, an analyst at J.P. Morgan, in a research note. "Importantly, there were no new safety concerns in the data presented, removing a major risk, and the immediate feedback from neurologists at the session was positive."

Adverse reactions were reported by 95 to 96 percent of patients, whether in the placebo group or treatment group. The most frequently reported events were flushing, MS relapse, nasopharyngitis, headache, diarrhea and fatigue. There were no deaths related to study treatment. There was no increase in infections, serious infections, opportunistic infections or malignancies, data showed.

Thomas Wei, an analyst at Jefferies & Company, said the data show that continued dosing of BG-12 beyond six months strengthens efficacy benefit, giving him increased confidence that the efficacy in DEFINE "will likely be replicated in

CONFIRM."

The improvement in results with longer treatment likely explains why results from the two-year-long Phase III trial were significantly better than the six-month-long Phase II trial.

"BG-12 is clearly the trend of ECTRIMS 2011," said Geoff Porges, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein. "The sentiment is very positive and every physician that we spoke to repeated the same phrase: "If the CONFIRM data is as strong as DEFINE, this drug will be the best selling drug in MS in a few years."

Shares of Weston, Massachusetts-based Biogen were up 5.7 percent at $107.48 in mid-morning trading on Nasdaq after rising as high as $108.46 earlier in the session.

Starbucks adds lighter 'Blonde' roast to lineup

Starbucks Corp. is going "Blonde," expanding its coffee lineup with its lightest roast to date in a move aimed at wooing more customers and capturing a bigger share of the U.S. coffee market.

The world's biggest coffee company is known for its dark roasts, which have prompted some critics to say the chain's coffee tastes burned.

The new, lighter roast unveiled Tuesday is milder in body and acidity than Starbucks' traditional coffees. Executives said customers had been asking for a lighter roast and they expect Blonde to appeal to a broad audience.

Mass-market competitors McDonald's Corp and Dunkin' Donuts offer milder brewed coffees and in recent years have added lattes, mochas and other sorts of "fancy" espresso drinks popularized by Starbucks.

"This is a significant opportunity for Starbucks to gain a greater share of the brewed coffee market -- both in our stores and down the coffee aisle," Cliff Burrows, president of Starbucks Americas, said in a statement.

The U.S. packaged coffee category is valued at $5.6 billion.

According to Starbucks research, more than 40 percent of U.S. coffee drinkers -- or about 54 million consumers -- prefer a lighter roast coffee, Jeff Hansberry, president of channel development for Starbucks, told Reuters.

Additionally, more than 70 percent of all packaged coffee sales in the grocery aisle are either light or medium roasted coffee, Hansberry said.

The company will begin selling its new Blonde blends in Starbucks cafes and supermarkets in the United States on Jan. 10. They will be available in Canada in February.

Starbucks cafes also will brew a Blonde blend alongside its other daily coffees. Breakfast Blend is currently the lightest coffee available at Starbucks, while French Roast is at the darkest end of the roast spectrum.

Starbucks' last major addition to its brewed coffee lineup came in 2008, when it introduced Pike Place as an "everyday" brew. Chief Executive Howard Schultz later that year said Pike Place gave the company an incremental bump in sales.

The company debuted Via instant coffee in 2009 and expects it to one day grow into a billion-dollar business.

Starbucks restarted profit growth in 2010 after a two-year restructuring that involved slashing costs and shuttering almost 1,000 cafes globally. Since then, investors have enjoyed quarterly profits that often topped analysts' views.

Raiders acquire Carson Palmer from Bengals (AP)

ALAMEDA, Calif. ? Carson Palmer went to bed a retired football player resigned to the fact that the Cincinnati Bengals would never grant his wish to be traded.

He woke up to a text message early Tuesday morning telling him to fly to Oakland to complete a trade with the Raiders, who are counting on Palmer to replace the injured Jason Campbell and lead the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

"It's been a whirlwind," Palmer said. "I understand what's expected of me. I know what playing quarterback is about, and it's about winning. I want to come in a contribute and do whatever I can to help this team."

The Raiders are hoping he can do a lot, having traded a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional second-rounder in 2013 that can become another first if Oakland makes it to the AFC title game in either of the next two years.

Coach Hue Jackson believes Palmer is the ideal fit, having recruited and coached him at Southern California and been an assistant in Cincinnati with Palmer.

Jackson said Palmer has the strong arm and athleticism that late Raiders owner Al Davis always wanted in a quarterback.

"This guy can play and he knows how to play the game and he knows how to elevate the players around him," Jackson said.

"There's no question you go on offense as good as your quarterback is. I think he's one of the best and that's why he's on this football team now. I didn't bring him here because he was just a guy sitting out there. I brought him here because I think he can help this team win a championship."

The Bengals had been adamant about not trading Palmer, who wanted to be dealt from a team that has had only two winning records in the past 20 years.

Owner Mike Brown repeatedly insisted he wouldn't consider Palmer's request for a trade because he didn't want to reward him for holding out. He changed his mind after getting the big offer from the Raiders.

Brown said the play of rookie quarterback Andy Dalton made it easier to trade Palmer.

"We also find ourselves rather suddenly in position of being able to receive real value for Carson that can measurably improve our team, which is performing well and is showing real promise for this year and years to come," he said in a statement.

"When this opportunity arose, we felt we could not let it pass and needed to take a step forward with the football team if we could."

The Raiders (4-2) became desperate for a quarterback after Campbell broke his collarbone during a win over the Browns on Sunday.

Campbell had surgery Monday and was expected to miss at least six weeks, leaving the Raiders with only Kyle Boller and Terrelle Pryor on the roster.

Jackson's mantra all season has been "the time is now," and he backed that up by dealing for Palmer.

The Raiders also renegotiated Palmer's contract, giving him a $2.5 million guaranteed deal for the rest of this season, $12.5 million with $5 million guaranteed in 2012, $13 million in 2013 and $15 million in 2014.

Palmer had been working out in Southern California, trying to stay in shape and throwing to former teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh and high school players.

He hoped the work would pay off with another chance in the NFL, but he did not know.

"There was a number of times that there were teams approaching the Bengals and it didn't work out, so it was a very difficult time," Palmer said.

"I didn't know what was going to happen. I didn't know what was around the next turn, the next week, the next month. So there was a lot of confusion and I really didn't know what was next."

Palmer said it will take some time to learn the offense, build chemistry with his receivers and get back into football shape. Oakland hosts Kansas City on Sunday but Jackson would not say whether Palmer would start.

While Palmer has not played or practiced since last season, he has a history with Jackson, who was his offensive coordinator for two years at USC and the wide receivers coach for three seasons in Cincinnati.

Jackson was with the Bengals when Palmer had his best season in 2005 when he threw for 3,836 yards with 32 touchdown passes and a 101.1 rating while leading the team to an AFC North title. Palmer tore up his left knee during a playoff loss to Pittsburgh that season.

He came back and had two solid seasons before partially tearing a ligament and tendon in his passing elbow during the 2008 season.

He has not been an elite quarterback since, despite getting back to the playoffs in 2009. Palmer said he is completely healthy now.

Over the past two years, Palmer completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 7,064 yards, 47 touchdowns, 33 interceptions and a passer rating of 82.9 while posting a 14-18 record.

Those numbers are comparable to what Campbell has done since the start of the 2009 season.

But the Raiders were not willing to trust their playoff chances with Boller, who had not started a game since 2009 and had lost his previous 10 starts since October 2007, or Pryor, a project who will need time before he can be an NFL quarterback.

This is the second trade the Raiders have made since Davis' death. They dealt last week for former No. 4 overall pick in 2009, linebacker Aaron Curry from Seattle.

The trade leaves the Raiders with picks only in the fifth and sixth rounds in next year's draft. They traded their second-rounder during April's draft to New England for the picks to draft offensive lineman Joe Barksdale and running back Taiwan Jones.

They used their third-rounder to take Pryor in the supplemental draft in August. They traded their fourth-rounder in 2010 to get Campbell and the seventh-rounder for Curry.

"I know a lot of people think we've mortgaged the future of the organization," Jackson said. "I don't see it that way. I mean, I don't think you ever mortgage the future of an organization when you're putting a real big-time franchise quarterback on your team."

Oakland is expecting to get compensatory picks after losing Nnamdi Asomugha, Zach Miller, Robert Gallery, Thomas Howard and Bruce Gradkowski in free agency.

Physical appearance perfectionism scale developed

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2011) ? Collaborative research between psychologists at the University of Kent and China's Zhejiang University has resulted in the development and preliminary validation of a new diagnostic measure to gauge individual differences in people's hopes and concerns about a perfect physical appearance.

Named the Physical Appearance Perfectionism Scale (PAPS), it is hoped that this tool will help stimulate much needed research into a personality disposition characterised by striving for flawlessness and exceedingly high personal standards, overly critical self-evaluations, and concerns about others' evaluations of one's physical appearance.

PAPS was developed and tested by Kent's Dr Joachim Stoeber and Dr Hongfei Yang at Zhejiang. Their research involved eight separate studies with 2316 students at Zhejiang's Xixi campus and Kent's Canterbury campus between 2006 and 2010. A paper describing the research is currently in press with the Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment.

Dr Stoeber said: "Today's society places great importance on people's physical appearance. We are surrounded by pictures of other people who look 'perfect': on billboards, in newspapers and magazines, on TV and in the movies, and on the internet. Perfect looks are highly valued because they symbolise success, happiness and being loved and admired by others. Consequently, many people strive to look perfect, and many others are concerned about their physical appearance worrying that they may not look perfect."

Dr Yang added: "The purpose of our study was to develop a multidimensional measure of physical appearance perfectionism that will help identify the associations between physical appearance perfectionism and general perfectionism, self-perceptions regarding physical appearance, and behaviours aimed at improving one's physical appearance and making a favourable impression. By doing so we hope to help elucidate the role that physical appearance perfectionism plays in body-image disturbance and body dissatisfaction."

Investors unexcited by BlackBerry's free apps offer (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? An offer of free games, translation software or other apps to compensate BlackBerry users for last week's prolonged outage left Research In Motion investors cool on Monday, and the shares fell 6 percent.

RIM declined to say if it would need to amend its earnings forecasts to account for the cost of its promise to give $100 of free apps to every BlackBerry smartphone user.

RIM is also offering a period of free technical support to businesses that use the gadget, which has steadily lost market share to Apple's sleeker, sexier iPhone. RIM's stock has dropped 60 percent over the past year.

"RIM has responded swiftly but this won't undo the damage done to its reputation," analyst Geoff Blaber at CCS Insight told Reuters earlier on Monday. "This may go some way to appeasing customers but what's critical is that the problem does not repeat itself."

Highlighting the challenges, Apple said it sold 4 million of its new iPhone 4S in the three days after its launch last week.

Tens of millions of BlackBerry users were left without mobile email and other messaging for up to four days last week after a failure at a RIM data center in England triggered a service disruption across five continents.

DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE

RIM may reveal more about its strategy for countering the competitive challenge at a conference for application developers in San Francisco that begins Tuesday.

RIM executives there are expected to unveil a major software upgrade for the PlayBook tablet computer. RIM may also provide a glimpse at next-generation smartphones using its QNX software, which already powers the PlayBook.

Long before last week's disruption, investor dissatisfaction with the management of co-chief executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie had led a wave of speculation about the future of the company.

Activist investor Carl Icahn squelched one of those rumors on Monday when he told broadcaster CNBC that RIM is not on his radar screen. Last month RIM's shares rose on speculation Icahn would buy into RIM and agitate for change.

Even so, a smaller activist firm, Jaguar Financial Corp, has said it is gathering the support of large RIM shareholders to push the board to look at strategic options, including a sale or split-up of RIM.

"DEEPLY GRATEFUL"

Last week's outage intensified criticism of the chief executives, who were accused of responding slowly to the crisis and communicating poorly.

On Monday Balsillie told Reuters the company wanted to make amends with customers.

"This is our way of expressing appreciation for their patience during the recent service disruptions and a tangible way of telling them how deeply grateful we are for their continued business," he said in a phone interview.

Balsillie declined to estimate how much the offer would cost RIM and said he was unable to say whether RIM might have to revise its earnings forecast for the current quarter, which ends in late November.

The financial impact could prove sizable if a sizable number of RIM's more than 70 million subscribers take up the offers.

Analysts have said compensation costs could reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars. If RIM were to pay back all carriers and customers for lost service it could knock between 3 and 5 cents off earnings per share in the quarter, according to BMO Capital Markets analyst Tim Long. That would reduce profit by $15 million to $26 million.

"CLEVER MOVE"

Even so, Richard Levick, who runs a U.S. consultancy that specializes in crisis management, praised the free-app offer but said RIM should have made the announcement last week.

"I think it's a good start, but they are always late," he said. "They are always behind the curve."

Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst at IDC, said the offer was a clever move by RIM because it would help customers to discover the app service. He said the company was likely to have struck a deal with app developers to keep the cost down.

"For RIM, this is an interesting way to attract users to the App World and incentivize them to search and download apps," he said.

The free apps on offer include games such as Bejeweled, and premium versions of a translation service and the music discovery tool Shazam. Users can download them from BlackBerry App World beginning Wednesday, with more to be added in the next four weeks. The offer runs until the end of the year.

"More important than the offer itself, is that RIM is showing goodwill and being humble," Jeronimo said. "They recognized the problem, apologized and now they are compensating their users."

By early afternoon the stock dropped about 6 percent at $22.54 on the Nasdaq.

New study reinforces need for continued infant sleep campaigns to prevent SIDS

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2011) ? New research reinforces the need for continued public education programs that encourage parents to place their infants to sleep in the supine (back) position in a safe crib or bassinet, to prevent an estimated 4,600 annual Sudden Unintended Infant Deaths (SUID), of which 50 percent are classified as Sudden Death Syndrome (SIDS).

The abstract, "Retrospective Review of Sleeping Conditions in Infant Deaths in New Mexico," was presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in Boston.

Public health efforts, such as the successful AAP co-sponsored "Back to Sleep" campaign, have resulted in a 50 percent reduction in the SIDS rate. More recently, the Cribs for Kids program provides safe cribs to low-income families, but there is no data to support the programs effect on the rate of SIDS. Despite the success of the "Back to Sleep" campaign, SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants under one year of age.

In the new study, researchers reviewed 91 deaths of children younger than age 1 in New Mexico between 2006 and 2010, of which 59 were SUID/SIDS and 28 were undetermined. Of these, 52 percent of the infants had been placed to sleep in a non-supine position, and 71 percent had been found on an unsafe sleep surface.

A shared sleep surface was the site of death in 50 percent of the cases. Having a crib in the home, however, was not a predictor of safe sleep habits. Of the 71 percent of infants found in an un-safe sleep environment, a crib was present in the home in 57 percent of these cases. In 30 percent of these homes, the crib was being used for another purpose.

"Despite the success of sleeping awareness campaigns, many of the remaining SIDS cases involve prone sleeping and unsafe sleeping environments, such as bed sharing and infants being put to sleep outside of a crib or bassinet," said lead study author Jessica Black. "Continued educational efforts on safe sleep practices for infants are essential in the efforts to prevent these infant deaths."

Protesters remain outside St. Paul's Cathedral (AP)

LONDON ? Hundreds of anti-capitalist protesters mingled with bemused bank workers outside London's St. Paul's Cathedral Monday, as welcoming but wary cathedral staff urged demonstrators not to deter tourists wanting to visit the historic building.

Around 500 demonstrators gathered outside the cathedral over the weekend as part of the global Occupy Wall Street protests. About 200 pitched tents around the cathedral, and have set up a makeshift kitchen, toilets and an information center.

The protesters, a loosely organized group inspired by the month-old movement in New York against corporate wrongdoing, seemed to have settled in for a long stay, but it was unclear how long they would be allowed to remain.

The ground immediately outside the church is owned by St. Paul's, which permitted the protest camp on the weekend, while the local authority also partly owns a stake in the nearby churchyard, part of London's medieval heart.

"It's quite a complicated, ancient melange of different interests," said the Rev. Rob Marshall, a spokesman for St. Paul's.

"The need is to keep access for pilgrims and tourists," he added.

Dean Graeme Paul Knowles of St. Paul's said prayer services had continued as normal over the weekend, but the "last few days have not been without various challenges." In his statement, he added that the protesters have been careful to make sure they do not block people trying to enter the cathedral but said cathedral staff, police and community leaders are "monitoring the situation carefully."

Protesters had planned to demonstrate outside the nearby London Stock Exchange, but they were turned back and returned to the foot of the cathedral, a London landmark nestled next to the city's financial district.

Designed by 17th-century architect Christopher Wren, its domed roof still dominates the London skyline. Princess Diana married there in 1981, her long wedding train tumbling over the steps where the protesters have set up their base.

Police tried to move protesters away from St. Paul's on Sunday but senior priest Giles Fraser said the demonstrators were welcome to stay and asked police officers to move instead.

One protester, Ian Chamberlin said the camp was well organized and peaceful.

"We have shared rules about things like not drinking, not taking drugs. We want to make sure the camp is a safe place to be," he said. "There's something symbolic about staying here, near the stock exchange, to pass on our message that the banking system isn't serving the needs of ordinary people, it is not a democratic force."

Chamberlin, 27, said he is willing to remain at the camp as long as he is allowed to.

Police said they can't remove the protesters as long as they have the landowner's permission, but will arrest anyone who commits a crime. Eight people were arrested over the weekend near St. Paul's, mainly for public disorder offenses, but police said the protests had been mainly peaceful.

Sit-down protests can be hard to dislodge. An anti-war vigil outside Britain's Parliament has continued for 10 years, despite repeated legal attempts by local authorities to move it. A handful remain even after legal challenges limited the protesters to the sidewalk, rather than the grass area of Parliament Square.

Thousands of people demonstrated against corporate greed in cities across Europe on Saturday, along with much smaller protests in cities across the U.S.

Rioters in Rome hijacked a peaceful protest, smashing bank and store windows, tearing up sidewalks and torching vehicles. The mayor of Rome says they caused at least euro1 million ($1.4 million) in damage.

AP source: Big East to invite Boise St, 3 others (AP)

NEW YORK ? The Big East plans to invite Boise State, Air Force and Navy as football-only members, and Central Florida to compete in all sports, after it doubles the exit fee for current members to $10 million.

An official in the Big East, speaking on condition of anonymity because the conference had not authorized anyone to speak publicly about its plans, told The Associated Press the invitations could go out as soon as next week.

The official also said Commissioner John Marinatto was in Cincinnati on Friday meeting with UCF's president and its athletic director.

Conferences do not publicly invite new members unless they are confident those invitations will be accepted.

CBS Sports first reported the Big East would invite Boise State, Air Force, Navy and UCF.

The Big East announced earlier this week it wanted to expand to 12 football schools.

Big East officials made protecting the league's automatic bid to the Bowl Championship Series their expansion priority. That pushed Boise State, which is in its first season in the Mountain West Conference after a decade in the Western Athletic Conference, to the top of the Big East's most wanted list, along with the service academies.

The Broncos are 71-5 since 2006, finished 10th in the final BCS standings last season and at 5-0 seem on their way to a top-10 finish. Big East officials believe putting Boise State's record on the Big East's ledger when the BCS reviews which leagues should have automatic bids beyond 2013 should allow the conference to make the cut.

Right now, the Big East has only six schools committed to play football in the league beyond this season.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse have announced they will move to the Atlantic Coast Conference, though Big East rules require them to stay in the league for the next two seasons and Marinatto has said he will hold the Panthers and Orange to that. However, that seems unlikely if the league can grow to 12 teams for next season without them.

TCU was slated to join the Big East in 2012, but the Horned Frogs reneged on that commitment and accepted an invite to the Big 12 last week.

Trying to recruit new members has been tricky for the Big East because its remaining members might also be looking for new conference homes.

Louisville and West Virginia are possible targets for the Big 12 if it needs to replace Missouri, which is pondering a move to the Southeastern Conference, or decides to expand back to 12 teams.

Connecticut has interest in joining the ACC if it expands again, and there has been speculation about Rutgers moving, too.

By raising the exit fee, the Big East is trying to show the schools it is recruiting that the conference will be viable in the long run. Boise State, Air Force, which also competes in the MWC, and Navy, an independent in football, all had reservations about the Big East's long-term health.

The Big East is still considering adding Temple, and UCF's Conference USA rivals SMU and Houston. Temple, which was kicked out of the Big East in 2005, plays football in the Mid-American Conference.

The Texas schools would replace the presence in the state the Big East thought it was going to have with TCU, and help make the move to the Big East more palatable to Boise State.

Boise, Idaho, is nearly 1,900 miles from the closest current Big East member, Louisville. Though the trip to Houston is about as far, having a presence in Texas is alluring to Boise State.

Boise State and Air Force would have to find a conference to house their other sports. A return to the WAC is possible for both, though WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said Friday that he has only had hypothetical conversations with Boise State and Air Force officials about those schools joining as non-football members.

The Big East also has eight members that do not compete in football: Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's, Providence, Seton Hall, Marquette, DePaul and Notre Dame.

Notre Dame's goal is to remain a football independent, but if the Big East crumbles the Fighting Irish could end up with no place for their basketball, baseball and Olympic sports to compete. That could force Notre Dame to finally give up football independence and put its storied program in a conference, because it's unlikely another league will give the Irish the same deal they have in the Big East.
