2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8: The Telltale Tail

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

?

The previous-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 earned a cult following for its bang-for-buck quotient and surprisingly precocious track capabilities. But what happens when customers cry for change?

?

Though the 2012 model claims to be the quickest Jeep yet-- its 470 horsepower V8 pushes it to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds-- the ?ber Grand Cherokee has succumbed to some consumer pressure in the name of functionality. SRT Chief Engineer Dave Cottrell says "There are people that love the look of the old car's center exhaust, but there were so many voices out there saying they wanted to be able to tow."

?

In a move certain to enthrall some and offend others, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee's sexy center exhaust was shifted to a split outlet setup, enabling?the 5,150 pound SUV to tow?up to 5,000 pounds.

?

Love it? Hate it? Feel like the truck's lost its soul? Emotional attachment aside, this is one of the many agonizing decisions engineers face every day-- and proof that sometimes, someone's guaranteed to be disappointed by the compromises inherent to automotive design.
