This week the folks at ARCHOS have revealed the GamePad, a gaming tablet with physical controls integrated into the device itself. This device brings on a lovely 7-inch display made to display games like the brand new Gameloft title Asphalt 7 ? a racing game to be reckoned with. This device comes packed with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor paired with a Mali 400mp quad-core GPU for high-class graphics.

This device is an officially Google-licensed device, meaning you?ve got full access to Google Play for apps as well as media of all types ? music, music, magazines, and books. ARCHOS also notes that this device works with a brand new bit of technology that ensures control compatibility with every advanced Android game: ?automatic game recognition and mapping tools.? You?ll be able to play anything!

This device takes on the Android gaming dream, what ARCHOS describes as follows:

?Until now, tablets provided gamers with touch controls that lacked response and compatibility for their advanced games, providing a disappointing gaming experience. As one of the main tablet uses, there is a strong need for a tablet that does more for gaming. Thanks to the complete touch and physical controls of the ARCHOS GamePad, Gamers can enhance their experience.?

This device will be popping up with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the first Google mobile OS to get game controller support right in the software framework. Once Ice Cream Sandwich was introduced, several groups started developing games that are ready to use 3rd party controllers. The ARCHOS GamePad will be able to work with those games, but with a brand new bit of mapping and game recognition tech, they?ll be able to make use of any virtual controls, mapped to the physical control buttons of the GamePad.

Gamepad ? what an ? imagimative ? name. Still, this promises much! Discuss this here!

Gas prices spike even far from Isaac's path

Tony Dejak / AP

Drivers as far away as Ohio are facing the biggest one-day jump in gasoline prices in 18 months as Hurricane Isaac swamps the nation's oil and gas hub along the Gulf Coast. Ohio prices jumped 14 cents.

By JONATHAN FAHEY, Associated Press

NEW YORK --?Drivers are being hit with the biggest one-day jump in gasoline prices in 18 months just as the last heavy driving weekend of the summer approaches.

As Hurricane Isaac swamps the nation's oil and gas hub along the Gulf Coast, it's delivering sharply higher pump prices to storm-battered residents of Louisiana and Mississippi ? and also to unsuspecting drivers up north in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

The national average price of a gallon of gas jumped almost five cents Wednesday to $3.80, the highest ever for this date. Prices are expected to continue to climb through Labor Day weekend, the end of the summer driving season.

"The national average will keep ticking higher, and it's going to be noticeable," says Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at Gasbuddy.com

The wide storm shut down several refineries along the Gulf Coast and others are operating at reduced rates. In all, about 1.3 million barrels per day of refining capacity is affected. So, it's no surprise that drivers in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida saw gas prices rise by a dime or more in the past week.

But some states in the Midwest are suffering even more dramatic spikes. Ohio prices jumped 14 cents, Indiana prices soared 13 cents and Illinois prices jumped 10 cents on Wednesday alone according to the Oil Price Information Service. Days before Isaac is expected to douse those states with rain, the storm forced the shutdown of a pipeline that serves a number of Midwest refineries.

Drivers in the region were angry and confused. ""I saw gas in my neighborhood for $3.56 a gallon just Tuesday morning, and now I'm paying $3.95. It's terrible," said Mary Allen of Cincinnati as she paid $20 for just over five gallons of gas. She wondered how Isaac could drive up gas prices in Ohio ? and then resigned herself to a holiday weekend without travel.

The price surge is happening at the wrong time and the wrong place for Dickson Stewart, a 56-year-old electronics consultant, who is driving from Minneapolis to Savannah, Ga. this week. He stopped at a BP station in downtown Chicago Tuesday ? home to some of the highest retail prices in the country ? and paid $4.49 a gallon to fill up his Jeep Wrangler.

Stewart expects gas prices to fall after Labor Day. Analysts say he's probably right.

As Isaac fades away, the summer driving season ends, and refiners switch to cheaper winter blends of gasoline, station?owners should start dropping prices. "There is some very good relief in sight," DeHaan says.

When Katrina hit in 2005, the national average for gas spiked 40 cents in six days and topped $3 per gallon for the first time. Isaac likely won't have the same result, though its full impact on the refineries is yet to be determined.

The refineries are not expected to suffer long term damage. But refiners decided to shut down or run at reduced rates to protect their operations.

These facilities consume enormous amounts of electric power and generate steam to cook crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil. If a refinery loses power suddenly, operators can't properly clear the partially cooked oil out of pipes, and re-starting the refinery can take several days or even weeks.

In advance of Isaac, refineries instead conducted what is known as an orderly shutdown, so they can re-start as soon as the power supply is assured again. The Gulf refineries will likely stay off line for about three days.

Isaac cut into the amount of gasoline being produced, and raised fears that supplies could fall dangerously low if the storm proved worse than expected. When supplies drop or are threatened, wholesale prices rise. Then distributors and station owners have to pay more to fill up their station's tanks. They then raise their prices based on how much they paid for their current inventory, how much they think they will have to pay for their next shipment, and, how much their competitors are charging.

Prices spiked particularly high in the Midwest because Isaac forced Shell to close a pipeline that delivers crude from St. James, La. to refineries in the region.

Gasoline prices are particularly vulnerable to spikes around this time of year. Refiners keep a low supply of more expensive blends as driving season ends, knowing they'll soon be able to make cheaper winter blends of gasoline.

"We are really working with a just-in-time delivery system," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Pump prices were on the rise even before Isaac blew in. The average price for gas rose about 40 cents from July 1 to mid-August because of higher oil prices and refinery problems in the Midwest and West Coast. At $3.80 per gallon, the national average is the highest since May 1 and well above the previous record for Aug. 29, $3.67 in 2008.

Wednesday's jump of a nickel was the 10th biggest one-day jump on record, according to OPIS, and the biggest since the average price rose 6 cents on February 15, 2011 when turmoil in Libya was rising.

But prices could quickly come down if refineries can soon get up and running. Crude oil prices fell Wednesday and wholesale gasoline prices fell the past two days, suggesting the spike in retail gasoline prices could be short-lived. Americans will soon do less driving and the switch to cheaper blends will be well underway by mid-September.

That's still too late for Sharon Simon of Gadsden, Ala. She's driving 900 miles north to her daughter's wedding in Olean, N.Y. this weekend, and will now have to spend an extra $30 to $50 on gasoline for the trip. "Just as we are getting ready to head out the prices go up," she said. "I'm fed up with the surge in price every time there is a holiday."?

Turkey presses U.N. to house refugees inside Syria

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu urged the United Nations on Wednesday to care for displaced Syrians inside their country instead of letting them flood into Turkey, which already hosts more than 80,000 refugees.

Ankara, fearing a mass influx such as the flight of half a million Iraqi Kurds into Turkey after the 1991 Gulf War, has floated the idea of a "safe zone" under foreign protection within Syria for civilians fleeing intensifying violence.

"We expect the United Nations to engage on the topic of protecting refugees inside Syria and if possible sheltering them in camps there," Davutoglu told a news conference in Ankara.

Ankara has discussed the issue with U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and U.N. aid chief Valerie Amos, he said, adding that both intended to visit Turkey again.

NATO-member Turkey is reluctant to act alone to set up a safe haven inside Syria since protecting it from attack by Syrian forces would effectively mean military intervention in the 17-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Yet there is scant Western appetite for military action in Syria and no prospect of a U.N. Security Council mandate for it, given Russian and Chinese willingness to veto any such proposal.

Davutoglu was speaking shortly before going to New York to attend a U.N. Security Council meeting on Syria on Thursday.

The United Nations said on Tuesday that up to 200,000 Syrians could flee to Turkey alone if the conflict worsens.

"When we talk about figures in the hundreds of thousands, this problem no longer remains a problem of an internal conflict in any one country but becomes an international dangerous problem," said Davutoglu, reflecting Turkey's frustration at the refugee burden and the Security Council's disunity over Syria.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said the council's failure to act indirectly supported oppression in Syria, criticizing vetoes of U.N. resolutions by China and Russia as a "fiasco".

Protect your Hardwood Floors from Furniture Weight

When hardwood floors are newly installed, they look lustrous and elegant. They are so shiny that you feel like not walking on them as they may get damaged. Hardwood floors are quite durable and that is why they are meant to increase a property value. Given the fact that hardwood floors last really long, pressure of heavy furniture, exposure to moisture and walking on them with high heels can damage the quality of this type of flooring. However, there are certain things that you can do to protect your precious hardwood flooring from these damaging probabilities especially from furniture weight.

There are several products available for hardwood protection from furniture weight. For example, you can use furniture pads that are cork or felt pads. Place these pads on the furniture legs to reduce the pressure of the heavy furniture from your hardwood floor and thereby, prevent denting. Different furniture comes in varied sizes and weight. Therefore, the size of the furniture pad should differ with the size as well as the heaviness of the furniture.

You should be careful while moving the furniture. Hurrying while moving the furniture from one place to another can cause scratches on the hardwood floor easily. It is better to use a trolley, felt pads or a piece of plywood to protect the floor when you are moving furniture. You should take care of one thing always in this respect and that is to avoid sliding the furniture. Instead pick it up and move it. You may require help from others for this job, so do not feel shy to ask for help if you want to protect your valuable hardwood flooring. Also check that the furniture is moved properly during deliveries or when you are using movers.

You can visit a home improvement store to purchase area rugs that come with padding. Apart from adding a fine contrast to your room, area rugs also add padding between the weight of the furniture and the floor. When you are using area rugs, make sure that you use those that provide padding. Using area rugs without padding can damage your hardwood floor. In case, you have area rugs (without padding) at home, you can attach the padding with a tape.

Recoating your valuable hardwood floors is a good option. This should be done every 7 to 10 years as this forms an important part of proper cleaning and damage preventive methods for hardwood flooring. This particular preventive measure not only makes your hardwood floor strong and durable and lustrous but also protects the floor from the pressure produced by heavy furniture and other weighty items. Recoating provides a solid layer to your flooring. It gives protection against scratches and dents. You can save a lot of money regarding hardwood floors repairs in future.

These are the various ways by which you can protect your hardwood floors from furniture weight. You can also do a research on hardwood protectives products on the Internet for this purpose.

Working moms spend less time daily on kids' diet, exercise

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? When it comes to cooking, grocery shopping and playing with children, American moms with full-time jobs spend roughly three-and-half fewer hours per day on these and other chores related to their children's diet and exercise compared to stay-at-home and unemployed mothers, reports a new paper by a Cornell University health economist.

Male partners do little to make up the deficit: Employed fathers devote just 13 minutes daily to such activities and non-working fathers contribute 41 minutes, finds the study, which will be printed in the December issue of Economics and Human Biology.

The findings are consistent across socio-economic lines measured by the mothers' education, family income, race and ethnicity.

To make up for this time deficit, working mothers are significantly more likely to spend time purchasing prepared foods -- takeout from restaurants or prepackaged, ready-to-eat meals from grocery stores -- which are generally less nutritious than home-cooked meals.

"It's inaccurate to pin rising childhood obesity rates on women, given that husbands pick up so little of the slack," cautioned lead author John Cawley, professor of policy analysis and management and of economics at Cornell's College of Human Ecology.

The study does not prove that employment alone drives the way mothers spends their time. "For example, mothers who choose to work might be those who enjoy cooking less and who would cook less whether working or not," Cawley said.

He added that working mothers produce additional benefits for children such as more money to provide for family needs.

"It's important to remember that we can take steps to enhance childhood nutrition and physical activity without advocating that women exit the workforce," Cawley said. For instance, the authors argue, parents should be better educated about the nutritional content of restaurant and prepackaged foods. "In order to make more informed decisions, consumers need to have nutrition and calorie information available where they buy their food," said Cawley, who noted that federal health care reform rules will soon require chain and fast-food restaurants nationwide to post calorie counts of the foods they sell.

Cawley noted that schools shoulder a greater burden for supporting healthy lifestyles.

"Our findings underscore the importance of schools offering high-quality foods and physical education classes," he said. "In general, the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are urging comprehensive changes in school environments to promote healthy eating and active living."

The research was funded by the Cornell University College of Human Ecology's Institute for Health Economics, Health Behaviors and Disparities and by the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

How (and why) you should enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account

    1 day

After some security woes, the folks at Dropbox have finally made two-step verification available to their users. Here's what that means, why it's important?and how to use it.

Two-step (or two-factor) verification means that logging into an account?requires two proofs of identity ? typically a password and a temporary code sent to a cellphone or generated by an app.?This process keeps?your account safe even if your password is somehow compromised (or if the cellphone which receives the temporary codes is misplaced). Without both items, it's not possible to log into the account.

In order to enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account, you'll need to sign into the Dropbox website and open your account menu (by clicking on your name, in the upper-right corner). Once in there,?open the settings and click on the "security" tab. In the "account sign in" section, you'll find the option to turn on two-step verification.?You'll be asked to enter your Dropbox password and then get the option of receiving your temporary security codes via text message or by using a mobile app. You'll also be prompted to write down a?backup code, which you should keep somewhere safe?? so that you have it in case your phone ever disappears.

And that's it. After you've gone through these steps, you'll use your password and a temporary security code to log into Dropbox. And you'll rest easily, knowing that your account is far more secure.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Roche drug helped breast cancer patients survive longer

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG said its "armed antibody" T-DM1 drug significantly extended the lives of women with an aggressive type of breast cancer compared with those receiving the standard drug cocktail.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, with about 1.4 million new cases diagnosed each year and more than 450,000 women dying of the disease annually, according to the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Roche said its Genentech unit will soon submit a marketing application to the European Medicines Agency for trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) and has already applied for a license with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Roche said the study of the drug had now met both primary efficacy endpoints of significant improvements in overall survival and progression-free survival, adding it will present the data at an upcoming medical meeting.

Roche, the world's largest maker of cancer drugs, has been developing T-DM1 as a successor to its blockbuster Herceptin, its third-biggest seller, which could be exposed to so-called "biosimilar" generic competition in Europe from around 2015.

Vontobel analyst Andrew Weiss said the data could be presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December, predicting possible peak sales for the drug of 1.7 billion Swiss francs ($1.8 billion).

"Roche is the dominant force in cancer and ... continues to drive innovation in this area," Weiss said as he confirmed his "buy" recommendation on Roche shares, which were up 0.3 percent by 03.33 a.m. EDT.

The drug makes use of some technology from U.S.-based ImmunoGen Inc, whose shares jumped 23 percent to $17 in U.S. premarket trade on Monday. Roche shares dipped 0.1 percent.

The trial for women with breast cancer known as HER-2 positive - which makes up about a fifth of all breast cancers - compared T-DM1 to a combination of GlaxoSmithKline drug Tykerb, and Roche's Xeloda.

An advantage of T-DM1 over conventional treatment using Herceptin plus chemotherapy, is that it causes fewer adverse side-effects like hair loss and low white blood cell counts.

T-DM1 combines trastuzumab, an antibody and the active ingredient in Herceptin, with the agent DM1 - a derivative of a powerful type of chemotherapy called maytansine - which is carried directly into cells.

"We believe that antibody-drug conjugates have the potential to change the future treatment of cancer," Roche Chief Medical Officer Hal Barron said in a statement.

The drug uses ImmunoGen`s technology named TAP, or Targeted Antibody Payload. A TAP compound consists of a manufactured antibody that binds cancer cells with a cancer-killing agent attached to it.

In June, U.S. health regulators approved Perjeta, another new breast cancer drug from Roche for HER2-positive women.

Genentech, which developed Perjeta, suffered a blow last year when the FDA revoked approval for its blockbuster drug Avastin as a treatment for breast cancer, saying the drug was not effective enough to justify its risks. ($1 = 0.9594 Swiss francs)

    Lenovo IdeaPad Y580

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 ($1,099 direct) is, quite literally, a big idea. In addition to its large physical frame, it almost completely eliminates the need for a desktop PC, sporting a huge screen, built-in Blu-ray drive, and a full-sized keyboard. Throw in exemplary multimedia and gaming capabilities and it's hardly confounding that the IdeaPad Y580 is a shoe-in as our new Editors' Choice for media laptops.

    Design
One thing's for certain: The IdeaPad Y580 won't be confused with an ultrabook any time soon. It's a behemoth of a system, measuring 15.2 by 10 inches (WD), with its thickness ranging from 0.9 inches at its thinnest point to 1.4 inches at its thickest. Meanwhile, its weight of 6.07 pounds is nearly twice as heavy as that of a typical ultrabook. Although the IdeaPad Y580's hulking chassis is constructed primarily out of plastic, its palmrest and lid are both decked out in a metallic finish. With a maximum resolution of 1,920 by 1,080, images and text alike looked crisp on the glossy 15.6-inch screen. Moreover, video playback looked fantastic in 1080p, an attribute that's all the more useful, thanks to the IdeaPad Y580's built-in Blu-ray player. I decided to test the Y580's ability to showcase movies, so I threw on the Your Highness Blu-ray and was immediately struck by the superb image quality. The built-in JBL speakers directly above the keyboard are equally impressive, pumping out surprisingly loud and distortion-free sound with gusto. Taken together, it quickly becomes apparent that while most laptops are merely adequate for playing music or movies, the Y580 manages to get the job done on its own without the need for external speakers or an additional display.

As fun as it is to watch movies and listen to music, though, most folks still buy a laptop with a semblance of productivity in mind. Fortunately, the IdeaPad Y580 has nailed this. The ample full-size keyboard features a numeric keypad and tiled keys with rounded bottoms, making for a smooth typing experience. The palm rest is equally comfortable, offering an abundance of hand real estate, and nary a thumb inadvertently graced the touchpad during use. The touchpad itself is accented with a thin strip of silvery metal around its edges, and incorporates the right- and left-click buttons into a singular design. Like the keyboard, the IdeaPad Y580's touchpad is large and comfortable to use, and pinch-zooming and two-finger scrolling were both executed effortlessly.

The IdeaPad Y580 comes with a healthy serving of ports. The front sport a 6-in-1 card reader (MMC, MS, MSPro, SD, SDHC, xD), whereas the right side of the system sports the aforementioned Blu-ray player / DVD burner, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.0 port, and headphone and microphone jacks. Meanwhile, the right side is equipped with dual USB 3.0 ports, a VGA port, an Ethernet port, and a full-size HDMI output, which conveniently eliminates the need for dongles when connecting the system to a larger display. Alternatively, wires and dongles alike can be ditched altogether since the Y580 features built-in Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology, allowing it beam the audio and video to an HDTV outfitted with an aftermarket adapter, like the Netgear Push2TV ($99 list).

The IdeaPad Y580 comes equipped with a 1TB, 5,400rpm hard drive and a 32GB solid-state-drive (SSD), the latter of which has 12.7GB of free space out the box since it's loaded with some preloaded software and drivers. While users have the option of installing new apps to the SSD, its primarily designed to operate in the background to allow the Y580 to quickly reboot from sleep mode. Otherwise, new apps can be installed on the 1TB hard drive, which is plenty capacious. Overall, the ratio of useful apps (Microsoft Office Starter 2010, a full version of McAfee Internet Security) to unnecessary bloatware (desktop links, for instance) fortunately tips in favor of the user.

    Performance
Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 Given its combined 2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM processor and 8GB RAM, the IdeaPad Y580 steadfastly hovered near the top of its class across the board. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,886 trumped all other media center laptops, edging past the HP Envy 17 (2012) (2,805). Likewise, the IdeaPad Y580 displayed exceptional agility in our multimedia tests. It tied for first place with its predecessor, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 , in completing our Handbrake video-encoding test (1 minute 17 seconds) and breezed past the Envy 17 (1 minute 30 seconds) without breaking a sweat. Similarly, its Cinebench score of 6.22 muscled past all others, save for the Lenovo Y480 (6.26), leaving the Envy 17 within striking distance (5.19) while the rest lagged behind. Likewise, the Y580 completed our Photostop CS5 test in a brisk 3 minutes 25 seconds, falling a shade short of the Lenovo Y480 (3:20) while still sprinting past the HP Envy 17 (3:37) and, to an even further extent, the Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7170 (3:56).

The IdeaPad Y580's discrete 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX660M GPU swaggered through our gaming tests with ?lan, easily breaking the 30 frames per second (fps) playability barrier in medium quality settings while only falling slightly short in high quality settings. It led the pack in our Crysis benchmark tests (97fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution; 13fps in high quality at native resolution) and muscled past the Envy 17 (88fps and 12 fps, respectively). While the IdeaPad Y580 performed admirably in our Lost Planet 2 benchmark tests (71fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution; 28fps in high quality at native resolution), it fell slightly short of the Toshiba Qosmio X775 (76fps and 33fps, respectively) as well as the Envy 17 in medium quality settings (77fps and 28fps, respectively). On the other hand, the Y580 nearly outshined its entire class in 3DMark 06 (15,486 at medium detail settings and 1,024-by-768 resolution; 12,720 at native resolution with 4x anti-aliasing). Despite falling a bit short of the Toshiba Qosmio X775 (15,576 and 11,174, respectively) in medium detail settings, the IdeaPad Y580's native resolution score still outperformed the rest.

    Lenovo IdeaPad Y580

The one area in which the IdeaPad Y580 didn't thoroughly dazzle was battery life. Its removable 72 Wh battery lasted 4 hours 41 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test, which was shorter than all others, with the exception of the Toshiba Qosmio X775 (3:07). While the Lenovo Y480 held out slightly longer (4:48), both the HP Envy 17 (7:19) and, to a more pronounced extent, the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) (8:38) lasted twice as long as the Y580.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 gives plenty of bang for the buck and almost entirely eliminates the need for a desktop altogether. It features a dazzling screen with 1080p resolution, a built-in Blu-ray player, and even a full-sized keyboard on top of superlative multimedia and gaming capabilities. While the HP Envy 17 (2012) offers a similar smorgasbord of features, the Y580 nonetheless outguns it while costing nearly $400 less. For these reasons, we're willing to overlook its so-so battery life, and it rightfully earns its place as our Editors' Choice for media laptops.

HAVANA: Cuba campaign takes on 'free' health care | Health | The ...

? Cuba's system of free medical care, long considered a birthright by its citizens and trumpeted as one of the communist government's great successes, is not immune to cutbacks under Raul Castro's drive for efficiency.

The health sector has already endured millions of dollars in budget cuts and tens of thousands of layoffs, and it became clear this month that Castro is looking for more ways to save when the newspaper voice of the Communist Party, Granma, published daily details for two weeks on how much the government spends on everything from anesthetics and acupuncture to orthodontics and organ transplants.

It's part of a wider media campaign that seems geared to discourage frivolous use of medical services, to explain or blunt fears of a drop-off in care and to remind Cubans to be grateful that health care is still free despite persistent economic woes. But it's also raising the eyebrows of outside analysts, who predict further cuts or significant changes to what has been a pillar of the socialist system implanted after the 1959 revolution.

"Very often the media has been a leading indicator of where the economic reforms are going," said Phil Peters, a longtime Cuba observer at the Lexington Institute think tank. "My guess is that there's some kind of policy statement to follow, because that's been the pattern."

The theme of the Granma pieces, posters in clinics and ads on state TV is the same: "Your health care is free, but how much does it cost?"

The answer is, not much by outside standards, but quite a bit for Cuba, which spends $190 million a year paying for its citizens' medical bills.

Based on the official exchange rate, the government spends $2 each time a Cuban visits a family doctor, $4.14 for each X-ray and $6,827 for a heart transplant.

It's not a luxury service though. Scarcities now are common and sanitary conditions fall short of the ideal in decaying facilities where paint peels from the walls. Patients often bring their own bed sheets, electric fans, food and water for hospital stays.

One Havana-based clinical physician applauded the campaign, saying it targets a pervasive problem: Conditioned to think about health as an inalienable right, many Cubans rush to the hospital whenever they come down with a cough or the sniffles, demand expensive tests before they've even been examined and sometimes get aggressive if doctors refuse.

"Respect for doctors has entirely been lost," he said. "Some will indulge a patient for fear of how they might react."

The physician spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss health care with a foreign journalist. Interview requests were not granted by the Health Ministry, though a spokeswoman said in a brief email response that the costs in Granma were the result of careful study.

The fact that the figures were published at all suggests a sea change in conceptions about health care, said Nancy Burke, director of the Cuba Program in Health Diplomacy at the University of California, San Francisco.

"It's interesting that the health care system, which has always been touted as a basic human right, is now being put into market terms," said Burke, a medical anthropologist who makes yearly research trips to Cuba. "That says so much about Raul's market reforms and the ideology ... informing that. It's a real shift, a major shift in the way of thinking about health care."

She noted that the island's doctors are increasingly cash cows for Cuba as it sends them abroad to treat the poor in countries such as Venezuela. The international missions fulfill a humanitarian purpose but also offset a significant share of the $28.5 billion in cash and subsidized oil that the South American nation has sent Cuba since 2005, according to Venezuelan opposition lawmaker Julio Borges, who says he uses public records to track the figure.

To cut costs in Cuba, state media have urged doctors to use their "clinical eye" before ordering pricey lab tests, and target the practice of people stockpiling medicine to carry them through shortages.

In one TV spot, a woman visits a doctor and requests a long list of pills. Asked why she needs so many, she replies: "Oh, doctor, it's for my personal stash."

"I stop cold when I see that, not knowing whether to laugh or cry," blogger Greter Torres Vazquez wrote on a Cuban youth-issues website. "Maybe they've never had the experience of going to the pharmacy and asking for medicine that their aunt, their grandmother, their mother needs urgently, only for the worker to say 'Sorry, we ran out five minutes ago.'"

Some seized on the campaign to complain about corruption in hospitals.

"They should also publish the miserable salary that doctors get paid; that's an embarrassment," said Maria Soto, a 62-year-old Havana resident. "And it's serious, because it leads to the problems everyone knows about: You get bad service or, even worse, they charge you under the table."

Cuban authorities continuously brag about keeping health care free and universal despite its lightweight economy and the 50-year-old U.S. embargo.

Experts credit the government's emphasis on prevention and doctor-patient relationships for life expectancy and infant mortality rates that are on par with those of wealthy nations. Medical schools churn out huge graduating classes; every last one of Cuba's 11 million citizens is supposed to get a house call at least once a year.

Charging for care would be a dramatic and unlikely about-face, but with 15 percent of the budget devoted to health, Havana sees no choice but to make the system more efficient wherever it can.

After steadily rising over five decades to hit $206 million in 2009, health spending has dropped, slipping to $190 million last year, according to government figures. Officials hint at more cuts to come.

These days, authorities rail against "irrational expenses" and have slashed more than 50,000 less-skilled health-sector jobs, singling out overstaffed clinics and ambulances with multiple drivers.

Some Cubans say hospital wait times seem to be on the rise and medicine, equipment and soap are increasingly in short supply.

The clinical doctor consulted by the AP said neither scarcity nor complaints have worsened, though doctors still suffer heavy case loads and low pay, about $25 a month.

Cuba is walking a delicate line on health: Too much change could be seen in some camps as a betrayal of the socialist contract. Too little may not ease the burden on a strained economy, said Sergio Diaz-Briquets, a U.S.-based demographer and author of "The Health Revolution in Cuba.

"It is maybe a universal phenomenon that health care systems are expensive," he said, "but Cuba perhaps cannot afford to have the kind of services that they claim to have had in the past."

Confident Murray has Wimbledon win - in his dreams

Andy Murray, his confidence for the US Open bolstered by an Olympic gold medal, knows what it feels like to win a Grand Slam title in his dreams even though he has never done so in real life.

The 25-year-old Scotsman, who avenged last month's Wimbledon final loss to World No. 1 Roger Federer by beating the Swiss star in this month's London Olympic final at Wimbledon, has suffered with intense dreams that didn't match.

"Four days after Wimbledon I dreamed I won Wimbledon, and I woke up in the morning and I was just starting to feel better," Murray said. "That didn't help.

"Then a few days after the Olympics, I dreamed that I lost in the final of the Olympics. Obviously waking up remembering that I had won was nice."

Murray is painfully aware he lacks a Grand Slam title in an era dominated by Federer, injured Rafael Nadal and defending US Open champion Novak Djokovic. But he has taken a spark of confidence from his Olympic gold medal.

"The one thing it has given me is a bit more confidence probably," Murray said. "But I needed to make sure that afterwards I worked hard.

"That's the most important thing, to make sure I kept my feet on the ground and keep working hard and try to improve."

Mission accomplished. Murray enters the US Open fit and well-prepared despite winning only once in key US Open hardcourt tuneups at Toronto and Cincinnati.

"Winning the Olympics was the biggest win of my career, that's for sure. It meant a lot to me," Murray said.

"Once you start getting on the match court again -- you never forget about it, but that feeling is a bit different. You are nervous going into matches and preparing for events. That takes your mind off what happened a few weeks ago.

"I feel confident in myself just now. That's what's important. I prepared well. I trained hard the last five or six days so I'm ready to go."

Once change in strategy Murray has made is staying at a quieter hotel to try and keep the hustle and bustle of New York to a minimum.

"Staying in a quieter hotel than usual this time," Murray said. "I like just being able to get back to the room and just be able to chill out. New York can be very, very noisy if you're staying right in the middle of Manhattan.

"Just trying to get out of here as quickly as possible and just relax in the evenings, and not spend too much time out and about."

The absence of Nadal with lingering knee trouble has meant that Djokovic could not face Murray or Federer until the final, while the two Wimbledon finalists are on a US Open semi-final collision course.

While Murray said he didn't see much difference for himself in the draw, he did say the US Open will miss Nadal.

"Tennis will definitely miss him while he's not playing," Murray said. "Tournaments definitely miss him because he brings something different to a lot of the players on tour in terms of his character and his personality and the way he is on the court. The energy he brings to the match court is incredible."

Researchers and colleagues identify PHF20, a regulator of gene P53

    Friday, August 24, 2012

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues have identified PHF20, a novel transcriptional factor, and clarified its role in maintaining the stability and transcription of p53, a gene that allows for both normal cell growth and tumor suppression. PHF20, the researchers found, plays a previously unknown and unique role in regulating p53.

When p53 is activated, it can mend DNA damage and eliminate cancer cells by binding to DNA. How p53 maintains its basal level and becomes activated remain elusive, but identifying transcription factor PHF20 and understanding its interaction with p53 and its induction of p53 protein stability and transcription has provided a clue.

Results of their research appeared in a recent issue of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology and also in The Journal of Biological Chemistry.

"When a cell undergoes alterations that predispose it to become cancerous, p53 is activated to either mend the DNA damage or eliminate the affected cells, thereby preventing the development of tumors," said Jin Q. Cheng, Ph.D., M.D., a senior member of the Molecular Oncology Department and Molecular Oncology and Drug Discovery Program at Moffitt. "A number of mechanisms normally keep a regulatory strong check on p53 and allow for rapid activation. Still much is unknown about the mechanism of p53 regulation."

After identifying PHF20 as a novel transcriptional factor, the researchers set out in subsequent studies to probe the function of human PHF20 and its effect on p53. They found that PHF20 not only transcriptionally induces p53 but also directly interacts with and stabilizes p53. Akt negatively regulates these processes by interaction and phosphorylation of PHF20.

To determine whether the absence of PHF20 might regulate stress-induced p53 expression, the researchers "knocked down" PHF20. In doing so, they demonstrated that in the absence of PHF20, p53 was reduced. These findings established the role of PHF20 as a key regulator of p53 and additional link between Akt and p53.

According to Cheng, the identification of PHF20 as a regulator of p53 is significant because PHF20 "participates in simultaneous multiple interactions with other proteins and DNA" and serves to stabilize and induce p53.

"Regulation of p53 is critical to allow both normal cell growth and tumor suppression," explained Cheng. "However, further investigation is required to understand PHF20 tumor suppressor function and its possible involvement in human malignancy."

South Korean Court Says Samsung Did Not Copy iPhone

    Published: Friday, August 24, 2012 at 7:54 a.m.
    Last Modified: Friday, August 24, 2012 at 7:54 a.m.

SEOUL, South Korea | South Korea's Samsung won a home court ruling in its global smartphone battle against Apple on Friday when judges in Seoul said the company didn't copy the look and feel of the U.S. company's iPhone, and that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

However, in a split decision on patents, the panel also said Samsung violated Apple technology behind the bounce-back feature when scrolling on touch screens, and ordered both sides to pay limited damages.

The Seoul Central District Court ruling called for a partial ban on sales of products including iPads and smartphones from both companies, though the verdict did not affect the latest-generation phones ? Apple's iPhone 4S or Samsung's Galaxy S3.

The ruling affects only the South Korean market, and is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation unfolding in nine countries. The biggest stakes are in the U.S., where Apple is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion over allegations it has created illegal knockoffs of iPhones and iPads.

The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents, which previously have been shot down by courts in Europe where judges have ruled that they are part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

"This is basically Samsung's victory on its home territory," said patent attorney Jeong Woo-sung. "Out of nine countries, Samsung got the ruling that it wanted for the first time in South Korea."

The ruling ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2 from store shelves in South Korea, saying that the products infringed on two of Samsung's five disputed patents, including those for telecommunications technology.

The court also denied Apple's claim that Samsung had illegally copied its design, ruling that big rectangular screens in cases with rounded corners had existed in products before the iPhone and iPad.

"It is not possible to assert that these two designs are similar based only on the similarity of those features," the court said in a ruling issued in Korean that was translated into English by The Associated Press. It also said individual icons in the Samsung products do not appear similar to the icons Apple used in the iPhone.

But the court ruled that Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung had infringed on one of Apple's patents on the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. The court banned sales of Samsung products using the technology, including the Galaxy S2, in South Korea.

Court spokesman Kim Mun-sung said the court's ruling was to take effect immediately, although companies often request that sanctions be suspended while they evaluate their legal options.

Nam Ki-yung, a spokesman for Samsung, said the company welcomed the ruling.

"Today's ruling also affirmed our position that one single company cannot monopolize generic design features," he said.

Apple did not respond to multiple calls seeking comment.

Anti-Israel activists get 2-year suspended sentence for trespassing arms factory

(JTA) -- A British court fined and handed a suspended sentence to two people who had trespassed on a weapons factory in protest of its dealings with Israel. ?

The Jewish Chronicle reported that Brighton Magistrates? Court on Thursday ordered Nero and Pidwell to pay the equivalent of $316 each in costs and gave them a suspended sentence of two years.

In April of 2011 they blocked the gates at the EDO MBM plant near Brighton, claiming they were protesting against the firm?s production of weapons systems supplied to Israel.

The pair are members of the Smash EDO group, whose activists have previously caused hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage to the EDO premises.

In a statement, the pair said they were ?naturally disappointed? with the verdict but planned to appeal.
