As Hurricane Irene maintains its course towards the Atlantic coast, SkiSafe Insurance, a countrywide leader in ship and private watercraft insurance, has extended coverage under its Hurricane Haul-Out program for insured boaters seeking to protect themselves from hurricanes. Introduced earlier this year in expectation of a record-setting hurricane season, SkiSafe?s Hurricane Haul-Out plan coverage reimburses boat owners for taking preventative measure to secure a vessel found where a Hurricane, Tropical Storm or Tropical Depression watch or alert has been issued by either the Nation's Hurricane Center or the Nation's Weather Service. SkiSafe will reimburse boaters for half of the costs incurred hauling the vessel to safe harbor and re-launching it once the hurricane has passed, up to $2,500 per incident. Additionally, SkiSafe urges all boaters to consider the following extra measures to safely secure their vessel in advance of a Hurricane or similar storm :
- Trailer Boats ? Transport the ship away from the path of the storm to a secure location.
- Quay Docked / Moored Boats ? Either haul the ship to a safe location away from the storm?s path or brace all lines to secure pilings.
- Bilge Inspection ? Confirm the boat?s bilge pump is absolutely functional and that its battery is charged to guarantee enough power for the duration of the typhoon.
- Remove Clobber ? Remove all portable boating equipment like marine electronics, cushions, sails, life preservers and safety equipment.
Though most boat insurance programs provide coverage for damage from a named Hurricane, Tropical Windstorm or Tropical Depression, Hurricane Haul-Out protection can help boaters avoid the strain linked with their vessel sustaining significant weather damage and make sure that they can exploit calm waters following the tempest.
Boaters are eligible for Hurricane Haul-Out repayment if they have insured against windstorms in their navigable area and an official watch or warning is announced for that area.
